Ellen DeGeneres is having second thoughts about joining “American Idol”

In Entertainment Weekly‘s cover story, featuring “American Idol” judges Ellen DeGeneres and Simon Cowell, when the rumor is brought up that Cowell may leave the show when his contract expires later this year, DeGeneres says “If Simon goes, I go!”

The article notes that DeGeneres’ comment prompted Cowell, in their joint interview, “to laugh — and squirm a bit. ‘Oh, Ellen!… That’s quite a tricky situation you’ve put me into!’”

Despite Cowell’s reaction, it’s not a laughing matter.

Gossip Cop knows for a fact that DeGeneres is having second thoughts about joining the hit competition show. An insider recently told Gossip Cop that DeGeneres is concerned about the time commitment and added work. In fact, she now has to tape “Ellen” earlier because of the demands of “American Idol.” And, said the source, “she doesn’t want to do it if Simon isn’t on the show.”

For the time being, however, we’ll at least have one season with both DeGeneres and Cowell. The new season kicks off on January 12, but DeGeneres won’t be on until the contestants hit Hollywood on February 9.

    she’s a damn comedienne she shouldn’t have accepted the job anyway. All the talented musical performers, veterans who have been working for years, that are legends, that have at times ‘guested,’ on the show (smokey robinson, gladys knight, diana ross, etc.) and ELLEN gets the slot?? Also, for all of Ellen’s woman power, it would have been nice if having found out that Paula Abdul was getting a pittance while Ryan Seacrest was getting like 100x what she’s been, had said, ‘I won’t do it, unless Paula comes back’ or how about since Ellen has more than enough exposure and her own show maybe trying to get the woman who built the franchise for 10 years her job back, instead of taking it. I hope she’s miserable, but than again, her actually complaining that she’s making millions on top of millions and is associated with one of the most historic talent shows ever, tells you EXACTLY what kind of person she is. I bet Paula wouldn’t have thrown Ellen under the bus like that. But women don’t stick together, gay or straight.
