Ellen DeGeneres Receiving People’s Choice Humanitarian Award
Ellen DeGeneres is being honored with the Favorite Humanitarian award at the People’s Choice Awards for her charity work, producers announced on Monday. The fan-voted show airs on January 6 on CBS.
DeGeneres joked in a statement that the honor “sums me up perfectly as I a both a human and an itarian.” The award comes with a $200,000 donation from Walgreen’s, which DeGeneres is giving to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. She may also be a double winner that night because she’s nominated, as well, for Favorite Talk Show host.
The talk show host is known as one of the most charitable celebrities in Hollywood. DeGeneres has donated millions of dollars to breast cancer awareness and formerly served as a representative for Pink for the Cure. She was also on the frontlines of raising money for Hurricane Katrina relief in her hometown of New Orleans, in addition to personally donating millions herself to the recovery effort. She’s also been a supporter of anti-bullying campaigns and has raised money for both the Trevor Project and Pacer Center.
But perhaps her most public charity work has been with helping animals. DeGeneres started the Halo Pet Foundation to help eliminate animal abuse and promote spaying and neutering of pets, as well as working extensively with the Humane Society.
