Elle Fanning Plays Transgender Teen In “About Ray” Trailer — WATCH VIDEO!
Elle Fanning plays a transgender teen in the first trailer for About Ray. Check out the video below.
The upcoming movie is a family drama, exploring the challenges faced when Fanning’s character transitions from female to male. Naomi Watts plays her supportive mother, while Susan Surandon is a perplexed grandmother, who wonders, “Why can’t she just be a lesbian?” Watts responds, “Because she’s not a lesbian, mom, she’s a boy.”
That’s not to say the transition is easy on her, with Watts’ character worrying, “What if he turns around one day, and says, ‘Mom, I made a mistake’?” And things become even more complicated when Ray’s estranged father (played by Tate Donovan) refuses to give parental consent for medical treatments. But Ray argues, “Prolonging this doesn’t keep me a girl any longer. It just keeps me from being who I already am.”
While certainly emotional, there are some light-hearted moments, such as when Ray exclaims “Thank god” to finding out her menstrual cycle will slow. The movie is slated to hit theaters on September 18. Just over two months later, The Danish Girl, starring Eddie Redmayne as the real-life Einar Wegener/Lili Elbe, the first-ever person to undergo male-to-female gender reassignment surgery, will get an awards season release.
