Stars Celebrate Elle Magazine’s 30th Birthday — See Throwback Cover Photos!
Elle USA is marking its 30th birthday on Thursday, and stars are joining in the celebration. Check out the photos below!
The U.S. edition of Elle was founded in 1985, and the magazine is celebrating its milestone anniversary throughout the month of September. But the festivities are now really heating up, with the outlet using “Throwback Thursday” to do a “time-warp.” The magazine announced on Instagram, “You’re not seeing things. If you’ve gone on ELLE.com today you may have noticed things look a bit like 1985… Because we’re throwing things back to our birth year for the ENTIRE DAY.”
So, what were things like back then? As Elle.com notes, “Madonna was queen, Fit for Life was THE fad diet, and some dudes no one had heard of named Domenico Dolce and Stefano Gabbana got into the fashion game.” In the three decades since, countless top celebrities have graced the magazine’s monthly covers. Now many stars are sharing their issues on Twitter and Instagram to wish Elle a “happy birthday.”
Elle MacPherson went back to June 1986, writing, “Thank you for making my career so memorable.” In contrast, rising star Allison Williams posted her February 2014 issue, saying, “TBT to one of my favorite covers yet,” and quipping, “You don’t look a day over 25.” Meanwhile, Rebecca Romijn opted to share THREE of her covers, including her “#babyface” 1992 edition (see above).
Paris Hilton highlighted two of her covers, although one seemed to be a UK edition. Sharon Stone also included international editions in her multiple posts. Lena Dunham noted in her caption, “Thank you, Elle, for thirty years of fashion, foibles and feminism. #TBT Being an Elle gal was a career highlight.”
Elle originally launched in France in 1945. The U.S. spinoff was the third to debut, following Japan. There’s been more than 35 other international editions published since then, with Malaysia getting its own just last year. Check out all the covers shared so far below.
