El Chapo Has NOT Escaped Prison For Third Time, Despite Report
El Chapo did NOT escape prison on Thursday night, despite a false report claiming that the drug lord broke out of jail for the third time. Gossip Cop can confirm that the story is a hoax.
Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman, head of Mexico’s Sinaloa Cartel, was sentenced to 20 years in prison for murder and drug trafficking in 1993, but escaped in 2001 after paying off guards. He remained a fugitive until 2014, when he was captured and put back in prison. But in July 2015, the drug kingpin once again escaped a Mexican prison by digging a tunnel beneath his prison cell. In January of this year, El Chapo was apprehended during a shootout in Mexico and locked up yet again.
But late Thursday, the website Information Nigeria published a report claiming that El Chapo had just broken out of the Altiplano Maximum Security prison, quoting a supposed “prison official” as saying, “This escape plot was even more calculated than his previous escape. It was very well planned. He pretty much just walked out of the prison undetected and have no idea where he is now.”
The outlet then cites an unnamed “Mexican daily” as detailing how El Chapo supposedly spent six months constructing a fake wall inside the jail that was “made to look and feel like a legitimate cinder block wall.” As the story goes, the drug lord then allegedly snuck behind the fake wall “to a waiting Jeep that drove him to a helicopter several miles away.”
Following the release of this tall tale, Twitter erupted with a firestorm of users spreading rumors about El Chapo having escaped, but Gossip Cop can help put an end to the speculation, as he is still very much incarcerated. In fact, Information Nigeria later apologized for publishing the fictitious story and admitted that the report “proved to be a hoax.”
