Eddie Murphy Reportedly In Talks to Host Oscars

Eddie Murphy is reportedly a leading contender to host next year’s Academy Awards.

The actor’s name is said to be at the top of the list thanks to his relationship with Brett Ratner, who directs Murphy in Tower Heist and is producing the 2012 Oscars.

Murphy is interested in the hosting job, according to multiple industry reports.

Ratner and co-producer Don Mischer are slated to meet with Academy officials after Labor Day, with a host announcement coming later this month.

Billy Crystal‘s name has also surfaced in recent weeks for the gig. Crystal has hosted the show eight times, but not since 2004.

Murphy earned an Academy Award nomination for his work in Dreamgirls, and has occasionally presented awards before, but he’s never hosted.

We gotta say – it’d be an intriguing choice.

Absolutely an intriguing choice – he’s certainly got the stand-up chops for it… but he also has the unfortunate position of no longer having the name clout he once did. His like-ability (for a lot of viewers) isn’t on par with former hosts. Maybe that could be a bit of a good thing. It would be nice to have an Oscars evening that was shaken up with good ideas and talent, not just gloss and smoke.

Yea, Ed needs to reinvigorate his career. Think he’s a great choice for the Oscars. However, he’s a risk much in the same way Chris Rock was… probably more so. I haven’t watched the Oscars in a long time… but I’d definitely watch if Eddie hosted.

I think it is a great idea. And I believe he would do a much better job than many of the past hosts.
