Ed Sheeran Talks Sex Symbol Status, Getting Cheated On In Billboard

Truth rating: 10

Ed Sheeran covers the new issue of Billboard, and opens up about the legion of female fans he’s amassed over the last year while getting betrayed by one girl in particular.

“I don’t see myself as a sex symbol, but if other people do, I’m not going to complain,” the British musician tells the magazine, saying “no one” wants to see him shirtless.

Sheeran’s style, however, has improved and he credits his publicist who “basically has changed me from being the worst-dressed male of 2012 to looking presentable.” Still, the singer is as recognized for his signature sound as he is for fiery red hair, though he’s the first to make “ginger” jokes at his own expense.

“Have you ever seen the Harry Potter films? They’re very unrealistic, and it’s not just about the wizards and the dragons. It’s that a ginger could ever have two friends,” he quips. Of course, Sheeran also talks about his new album X, slated to be released in June.

“The last album was more young and dewy-eyed and innocent. I’ve still got very nice songs on this record. But some of them are bite-y,” reveals Sheeran, who admits the change stems from heartbreak.

He specifically cites the song “Don’t,” which he acknowledges came about after he dated “someone for a bit of time, and then they ended up physically involved with one of my friends in the same hotel that we were staying in, while I was downstairs.”

Sheern warns, “If you date a songwriter, be prepared to have songs written about you. If you do nice things, you’ll have nice songs. And if you do f*cked-up things, you’ll get a horrible song.”

Close pal Taylor Swift has a similar mantra, and she sings Sheeran’s praises to the magazine, reflecting on their highly-successful Red tour.

“His show is so captivating and so brave. It’s a really bold move to go out on stadium tour with no band,” she says. “It was just Ed up there with his guitar every night, doing what he’s done since he was playing in clubs and bars and pubs in England as a kid.” Sheeran’s new single, “Sing,” debuts on Monday.
