Dumb and Dumber To Outsmarts Box Office Competition, Wins Weekend
Dumb and Dumber To won the box office in its opening weekend. The comedy hauled in $38.1 million, slightly more than earlier estimates. The sequel to the 1994 hit features Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels resuming their adventures as idiotic best friends whose low IQs lead to big laughs. The original film also opened up at number one, and went on to gross $127 million in the U.S. and $247 million worldwide.
The new release narrowly topped Big Hero 6, the animated family film, which hit $36 million for a second-place weekend finish ahead of Interstellar. The Matthew McConaughey–Anne Hathaway journey through space and time took in $29. 2 million for the #3 spot.
Beyond the Lights debuted in fourth place with $6.5 million, followed by missing-wife mystery Gone Girl at $4.6 million. The Bill Murray–Melissa McCarthy comedy St. Vincent earned $4 million, finishing in sixth place.
The Brad Pitt World War II tank drama Fury raked in $3.8 million. Rounding out the top 10 were two movies at $3 million, the Jake Gyllenhaal film Nightcrawler and the horror flick Ouija, with the innovative Michael Keaton dramedy Birdman. taking the final slot with $2.5 million.
