Drake Tries To Recruit Kevin Durant, Gets Toronto Raptors Fined $25,000
Drake just cost the Toronto Raptors $25,000 for trying to recruit Kevin Durant to join the team.
When Durant recently attended a Drake show in Toronto, the rapper is said to have announced, “I just want to show one of my brothers something. You know, my brother Kevin Durant was kind enough to come to the show tonight and watch us. I just want him to see what would happen if he came to play in Toronto. Let him know what would happen.”
At that point, the crowd burst into cheers and a “KD” chant.
But the NBA is not happy.
The league has reportedly determined that Drake’s public overture to Durant constituted a violation of the NBA’s anti-tampering rules, under which one team’s personnel can’t try to poach a player who’s under contract with another team.
Durant, a star for the Oklahoma City Thunder, is set to become a free agent in 2016.
Drake was formally named the “global ambassador” for the Raptors in 2013.
On Monday, according to reports, the NBA decided that this made Drake’s shout-out to Durant at the concert a fineable offense.
