“Doctor Strange” Wins Box Office

Doctor Strange is the latest comic book adaptation from Marvel. The highly-anticipated movie stars Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role as a doctor who learns how to wield mysterious powers after a car accident changes his life. As expected, the film drew in moviegoers and opened in first place with $85 million.
That was nearly double the debut of another new film. Trolls, featuring the voices of Justin Timberlake and Anna Kendrick, nabbed second place with a respectable $45.6 million. From there, it was a big drop to the number three spot, where Mel Gibson’s war movie Hacksaw Ridge debuted with $14.8 million. Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween, which topped the charts the last two weeks, settled for fourth place with a $7.8 million haul. Meanwhile, ticket sales of $6.3 put Inferno at number five.
Rounding out the Top 10 were The Accountant in sixth, with receipts totaling $6 million. Next was seventh place finisher Jack Reacher: Never Go Back, which earned another $5.6 million. Ouija: Origin of Evil and The Girl on the Train took the eighth and ninth spots with $4 million and $2.8 million, respectively. And just making it into the Top 10 was Miss Peregrine’s Home For Peculiar Children. The film made $2.1 million this past weekend.
