Don’t Breathe is a thriller/horror film starring Stephen Lang of Avatar fame as a sadistic blind man who fights back against home intruders attempting to rob him. With a budget of just under $10 million, the scary flick made more than two and a half times that in its debut weekend. In fact, with an opening of $26.1 million, the movie performed far better than predicted.
That unexpected success pushed three-time chart-topper Suicide Squad into second place for the first time since its release. For its fourth go-round at the box office, the DC Comics film had a haul of $12.1 million. Meanwhile, Kubo And The Two Strings took the third spot with $7.9 million. Sausage Party came in fourth with $7.6 million, followed by fifth place finisher Mechanic: Resurrection with ticket sales of $7.5 million.
Rounding out the Top 10 were Pete’s Dragon in sixth with $7.3 million, while box office receipts of $7.2 million put War Dogs in seventh. Bad Moms nabbed eighth with $5.7 million, and Jason Bourne secured ninth with $5.2 million. Just making it into the weekend’s Top 10 in the last slot was Ben-Hur. The remake earned $4.5 million.
