Donald Trump Announces He’s Running For President — WATCH VIDEO!
Donald Trump is running for President in 2016. The mogul made the announcement on Tuesday at Trump Tower in New York City. Watch below!
Trump had called a press conference for 11 a.m Eastern. In the lobby of one of his most famous buildings, his camp set up a blue stage that was adorned with multiple American flags. Following an introduction from daughter Ivanka, he made his entrance to loud applause at approximately 11:05 a.m., joined by wife Melania.
The business man and TV personality began by saying thousands were in attendance, and then went on to slam other the presidential candidates, before ripping on the state of America both domestically and internationally. Trump touched on Islamic terrorism, oil, the Mexican border, the economy, unemployment, Obamacare, and more. As someone yelled out, “We need Trump now!” he replied, “You’re right.”
“Our country needs a truly great leader, and we need a truly great leader now,” said Trump, “We need somebody who can take the brand of the United States and make it great again.” He went on, “So, ladies and gentleman, I am officially running for President of the United States, and we are going to make our country great again.”
After the declaration, Trump continued to stump, saying what would happen under “President Trump.” He later specifically called out Jeb Bush, said he was worth more than $8 billion dollars, and declared that the “American dream is dead.” He concluded, however, “But if I get elected president, I will bring it back.” The whole speech, said to be largely improvised and wildly different from the embargoed announcement given to reporters, lasted nearly 50 minutes.
Trump has spent a number of years claiming he’ll run for president, and arguing that he’s the best person for the job, but he’s never before followed through. In fact, he’s often hyped up big announcements, making it seem like he would be revealing campaign plans, only to share some other news about one of his many businesses. Jimmy Kimmel mocked Trump earlier this month for this reason, joking that his announcement this year would be that he’s transgender and becoming “Donna Trump,” much like Bruce Jenner transitioned into Caitlyn Jenner.
In 2011, Trump repeatedly said he was interested in running, only to announce in May of that year that he wouldn’t be participate in the 2012 election. In 2013, NBC president Bob Greenblatt, who oversees Trump’s “Celebrity Apprentice,” said they had talked him out of running. Now Trump’s actual announcement for 2016 makes him the 12th Republican candidate in the 2016 race. His entry comes one day after Jeb Bush announced his candidacy, and three days after Hillary Clinton officially launched her Democratic campaign. Check out Trump’s speech below.
