Donald Trump Honors Hillary Clinton At Inauguration Lunch (VIDEO)
Clinton, who unsuccessfully ran against Trump in the election for president, attended the swearing-in ceremony with husband Bill Clinton. It is tradition for former presidents and first ladies to be among the dignitaries in the event’s audience. But Clinton was in the unique position of having to watch her former opponent officially take over the job she wanted so badly for herself.
But her presence was not overlooked by the new president. Upon arriving at Statuary Hall for the traditional inaugural lunch with Congress, Trump greeted Clinton with a handshake and appeared to thank her for coming. Then, following the meal, he formally recognized her attendance.
Taking the podium, Trump began by saying, “I don’t think anybody wants to hear me speak anymore today, so I’ll cut it short.” He went on, however, to tell the crowd, “I’ll tell you, there is something that I wanted to say, because I was very honored, very, very honored, when I heard that President Bill Clinton and Secretary Hillary Clinton was coming today.”
“And I think it’s appropriate to stand,” he continued. “And I’d like you to stand up.” With that, everyone in the room rose to give an ovation, and Trump himself joined in the applause. He added, “And honestly, there’s nothing more I can say because I have a lot of respect for those two people.”
Clinton appeared appreciative on the remarks. As Gossip Cop reported earlier, as many celebrities reacted to the inauguration on Twitter, she tweeted, “I’m here today to honor our democracy & its enduring values. I will never stop believing in our country & its future. #Inauguration.” Watch Trump’s short tribute below.
