Donald Trump Uses Dwyane Wade Cousin’s Death To Drum Up African-American Votes
Wade broke the awful news of his cousin Nykea Aldridge’s death on Twitter, writing, “My cousin was killed today in Chicago. Another act of senseless gun violence. 4 kids lost their mom for NO REASON. Unreal. #EnoughIsEnough.” Wade’s family is from Chicago, and his cousin had just relocated to a new area. She was pushing one of her kids in a stroller on her way to register her children for school when she was fatally shot.
Cops believe she was an innocent victim of gunfire between two men, who are now in police custody. On Saturday morning, Trump tweeted about the heartbreaking situation… for political gain. In fact, during his attempt to capitalize on the tragedy, he didn’t even spell Wade’s first name correctly (see screengrab below).
The Republican nominee posted, “Dwayne Wade’s cousin was just shot and killed walking her baby in Chicago. Just what I have been saying. African-Americans will VOTE TRUMP!” And while the message racked up thousands of “likes” and retweets,” a number of people called Trump out for the message.
@laurenduca replied, “I’m sure you are all Dwayne Wade’s family can even think about right now!!” @VicBergerIV told Trump, “You are disgusting.” @RochelleRitchie said, “SO DISRESPECTFUL!!! No condolences! Using that woman’s death as your own political gain”
“You can’t pretend to care enough to check the spelling of his name before exploiting his cousin’s horrific death?” asked @alafairburke. @jesseberney commented, “I wonder if @realDonaldTrump has even the slightest conception of the horrible thing he’s done today.” @FieldNigra also remarked, “seriously? Dwayne Wade’s cousin? Do you even know Dwyane Wade?”
Even singer Michelle Williams called Trump “an absolute disgrace.” Star Jones, said, “We are all thinking about the senseless murder of #Nykea. Trump is thinking about himself. #EnoughIsEnough.” Arsenio Hall argued, “This isn’t what Mr. Wade needs this morning! So crass, insensitive, clueless and self absorbed. #smh #allaboutDonald.” And Don Cheadle tweeted to Trump, “You are truly a POS.”
“Are you actively trying to be the world’s worst person?” Josh Gad asked him. Jamil Smith of MTV News also wrote to the mogul, “What is wrong with you, man?” He went on, “That’s an honest question, @realDonaldTrump: what is wrong with you? You say Clinton just sees black people as votes. What did you just do? Exactly how would you have stopped Nykea Aldridge’s murder, @realDonaldTrump? It’s time we learn precisely how you’d magically stop crime.”
“Also, @realDonaldTrump, will you be citing all black murders going forward as reasons to vote Trump? Or just those related to famous people?” Smith asked. “Nykea Aldridge’s family just started mourning, @realDonaldTrump. I know from experience how painful this is. And this is what you do.”
Smith added, “I’ve lived 40 years as a black man in America, @realDonaldTrump. Seen many politicians exploit us. Never seen someone do it this crudely.” See a screengrab of Trump’s tweet below.
UPDATE: On Saturday afternoon, Trump deleted his original tweet, and then sent it again with the correct spelling of Wade’s first name. That prompted Patton Oswalt to tweet to him, “Your staff fixed the spelling but not the ugly threat? It’s not just you, is it Donald? Everyone around you sucks.” A short time later, Trump then posted, “My condolences to Dwyane Wade and his family, on the loss of Nykea Aldridge. They are in my thoughts and prayers.”
