Donald Sterling has reportedly given up controlling ownership of the Los Angeles Clippers, ceding the position to his estranged wife Shelly.

The move comes nearly a month after a leaked recording exposed racist comments he made during a phone conversation, leading to calls for him to step down.

Sterling finally decided to surrender control to avoid being forced by the NBA to sell the team, reports TMZ.

The site says Shelly is now negotiations with the league for a formal sale to “resolve the dispute amicably,” but hasn’t ruled out filing a lawsuit should the NBA cut her out of the process.

Last week, NBA commissioner Adam Silver slammed Sterling for offensive remarks he made about Magic Johnson in an interview with Anderson Cooper, further fueling the ongoing controversy.

Do you think Sterling should have to sell the Clippers?
