WATCH: Donald Driver Crowned Dancing with the Stars Winner

VIDEO

(ABC)

“Dancing with the Stars” has a new king and queen of the ballroom!

Donald Driver and Peta Murgatroyd won the Mirror Ball trophy at the end of the season 14 finale on Tuesday.

The pair faced strong competition from Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas, who finished second.

William Levy and Cheryl Burke came in third place.

All three couples earned a 30 for their final dance, but only Jenkins and Ballas had a perfect 90 out of 90 total after both Monday and Tuesday’s performances.

Those scores were combined with viewers’ votes, which counted for half of the final results.

This is Murgatoyd’s first win, and only her second year on the show.

(She was the first to be eliminated with Metta World Peace last season.)

Congrats! It was a surprise though. I thought Katherine has the trophy in a bag!

It may be good thing that an athlete won. We have seen some really good athletes coming very close and it was about time for one to snatch the victory.

My fav was Katherine so I am a little disappointed. But I am so happy for Donald, he was my second fav. He was consistent, put everything in his dance and always had a smile. He was a joy o watch (just like Katherine). Good job Donald.

I must say, football fans are totally dedicated. All those green bay fans came through or him.

Karina I beg to differ, Katherine was the best dancer and she didn’t win.

that was shocking, but maybe they wanted to give trophy for somebody who hasn’t won yet

  • LW

Have you ever watched the show??? Google past winners and see how many are famous athletes. They tend to win, despite not being the best dancers, because of their fan base.

  • Guest

I didn’t know who was until the show. He’s a football player, he plays for the green bay packers.

  • Packfan

It’s not really shocking. Donal Driver was a good dancer and worked his butt off to stay. Yeah, he also came in with his Packer fan base but that’s not the only reason he won. He worked for it. Every other person had a fan base. William Levy had every female who thought he was gorgeous but he still made third. So Donald obviously deserved it over him. I think Katherine did a good job dancing but she also had a more experienced partner. I’m glad Donald and Peta won.

  • Hapi

He absolutely deserved to win. Was under scored a couple of times but the people saw that he deserved to win & that’s how they voted. Congrats to Donald!

you have to vote, you get five votes, they really count.

    do they win money?

  • Olga901

What?????? The football player always wins. Have you ever seen the show?? Donald Driver was NOT the best dancer by any stretch of the imagination. William was the total package the show would have been a dud without him….

  • Anonymous

I agree that Katherine posed strong competition, so much so that I was sure that her and Mark would win, but that was not the case. Two other football players won Olga901, so you’re right. I was watching before I go to work at Dish, and I was surprised to find out Donald won, but his freestyle was quite good, which probably put him over the top. I started watching shows in the morning so I could spend time with my family at night, and I save 20 minutes of commercials with Auto Hop on PrimeTime Anytime recordings. I can watch commercial free, which means I can talk about the results at work that day.

  • Raidersangel213

Catherine didn’t have a fan base at all….that’s why she lost….she was the BEST for sure.

  • Kaitlyn Marshbanks

Katherine had an injury at the end of one performance. And she had a wardrobe malfunction that the judges did not take off for but still looked awkward in another performance. Many voters at home probably found it harder to overlook than the judges did. The most consistent, best dancer, Donald Driver, won. Yippee!

  • Kaitlyn Marshbanks

I’m glad you said “tend to win,” because they don’t all win. The winners have worked hard and been magnificent dancers. The dancers who did not deserve to win but who won only because of fan base were people like Donnie Osmond who NEVER deserved to win over Mya– who consistently outdanced him and others all season long. Donald Driver was the best overall dancer this year-JerryRice was a more well-known and more popular football player, but he did not win Dancing With the Stars because he was not the best dancer. Donald Driver was the best this year.

  • Kaitlyn Marshbanks

They did. But Jerry Rice was a better-known, more popular football player who did not win because he did not dance well enough to win. Donald Driver did his homework, worked hard, and magnificently executed the dance routines. He even did much of the choreography for his wildly popular freestyle dance in the end. Donald Driver truly deserved this win!

  • Kaitlyn Marshbanks

William was flat-footed. Professional ballroom dancers watched the show and graded the dancers online. Most were surprised at many of William’s 10′s. They specifically made mention of his flat-footedness. Some of those same ballroom experts gave Donald 10′s instead. Even Len had to admit that he had underscored at least one of Donald’s dances and apologized! William obviously worked hard, too — and gave some good performances. But Donald Driver was the best dancer overall!

  • Kaitlyn Marshbanks

Katherine was a wonderful dancer. But she had an injury near the end of one of her dances and it marred the performance. Katherine also had a very noticeable wardrobe malfunction in another performance, and while the judges did not take off for it, viewers at home probably found it hard not to. Katherine won over Miss Menounos, another good female dancer, even thought Miss Menounos danced better on some occasions. The vampire paso doble with Derek is an example. Donald Driver is a magnificent dancer who never had the awkward moments on the dance floor that Katherine had. Nor did Donald resort to mainly just wriggling his bum in some dances the way William did. Donald nearly always DANCED– and danced wonderfully. Even Len had to admit that he had unfairly underscored marvelously consistent Donald.

  • Kaitlyn Marshbanks

A Superbowl winning football player– and a magnificent dancer. He worked hard, executed, and deservedly won the mirror-ball trophy. Donald is so brilliant at everything he tries, that he actually choreographed much of his amazingly popular free-style country/western dance himself! Fantastic! Peta Murgatroyd, Donald’s partner, was wonderful, too.

  • Kaitlyn Marshbanks

But Donald won on his dancing skill and flair. Professional ballroom dancers graded the dancers online as well. And they said that Donald Driver was underscored much of the time. Even Len Goodman, a judge on the show, justifiably apologized for underscoring Donald. Donald overcame that with consistently brilliant dancing and thoroughly deserved his win.

  • Kaitlyn Marshbanks

?! How long have you been watching the show? Cheryl, another great pro, won with both an entertainer, whose last name is Lawrence and with football player Emmit Smith when she and the show were both very young — and new. Donald Driver was a magnificent, consistent dancer on the show — and even professional ballroom dancers who were grading the dances at home, got on the internet to say they thought he’d been underscored sometimes. Donald Driver deserved this win — plain and simple!

  • Kaitlyn Marshbanks

Packfan, you’re right. Even professional ballroom dancers who were scoring along at home thought Donald Driver had been underscored on occasion and deserved 10′s when he didn’t get them. Donald is an amazingly good dancer. And the discipline it takes to be a top athlete served him well. Great athletes from boxer Laila Ali to speedskater Apolo Anton Ono to a female Olympic gymnast proved that that discipline, skill, and knowldege of their own bodies’ potential are wonderful raw materials for building a great dancer. Donald Driver is also wonderfully creative. He helped choreograph much of his fantastic, popular country/western freestyle dance!

  • Kaitlyn Marshbanks

Actually, Katherine got a big fan base pretty quickly– which is why she stayed in the competition after faltering at the end of a dance with an alleged back spasm — which just looked like a big timing mistake at first. Katherine also had a very noticeable wardrobe malfunction which the judges did not take off for — but which voters at home probably found it hard to ignore. She’d danced with a pants leg wrapped around her foot for much of one dance. Donald Driver never had any of those and danced magnificently. It was pretty clear Katherine had had ballet and other dance training. Sometimes trained dancers have won over athletes and sometimes athletes’ self-discipline and competitiveness make them such amazing dancers that they win. This time Donald Driver outshone everyone else — and he deserved to win!Even professional ballroom dancers went online to grad the dancers and say that Donald deserved 10′s when he didn’t get them. And they also noted that William was flatfooted!

  • Kaitlyn Marshbanks

Hapi, you’re right. Donald Driver is a fantastic dancer. His hard work, self-discipline, willingness to incorporate good advice, creativity ( he helped choreograph that great Country/Western freestyle), good humor, and skill won him that mirror-ball trophy! Good on ya, Donald. And congratulations, Peta. Marvelous job!

  • Kaitlyn Marshbanks

?! Olga, Jerry Rice was a more popular football player than Donald Driver – who was considerably less well known than Jerry. But Jerry Rice did not win Dancing With the Stars, because Jerry Rice was not the dancer that Donald Driver is. Or that Emmit Smith or Hines Ward were/are! Len was right Donald Driver is the best football player dancer that has ever danced on Dancing with the Stars. Donald Driver is better than most star dancers on the show — period. Donald danced better than William. Even professional ballroom dancers watched the show and graded the performances. They couldn’t understand all of Williams’ 10′s. They said that William danced flat-footed. And that they would have given Donald 10′s instead. Even Len, one of the show’s judges, had to admit that he’d underscored Donald! Donald Driver’s skill and self-discipline made him a magnificent dancer. And he deserved to win — even though William and Katherine worked hard and turned in good, entertaining performances as well.

  • Kaitlyn Marshbanks

Gmanthebrave, Olga’s not right. Only football players who can really DANCE have won. Jerry Rice was much more well-known and popular than Donald Driver was at the start of the season. But Jerry Rice did not win because he was not as good a DANCER as Donald is. Professional ballroom dancers watched the show and graded the dances online. There were times during the season that they could not understand William’s 10′s. They said he was flat-footed. Those experts said they would have given Donald 10′s instead. William worked hard and was good, but Donald Driver was better. Plain and simple. And Katherine had a couple of really noticeable missteps or mistakes that were hard to ignore — for viewers at home at least!

I suppose I succumbed to the “popularity contest” the way others do Kaitlyn. I don’t have the expertise to decide who is the better dancer because I’m not a dancer myself. I’m happy for Donald though, and he’s a nice man. I read about how he is so devoted to his family, a good father (by outside observation) and his family sacrificed a lot for him to compete so long since they didn’t see him very often. Plus, the voting is week to week, not an accumulation of all of the weeks, and the popular vote only counts for half, so that it is more fair. It is so easy to pick who you want to win and root for them, which is what I did.
