D.L. Hughley: Caitlyn Jenner Only Won ESPY Because She “Put On A Dress” Like Mrs. Doubtfire — WATCH VIDEO HERE
D.L. Hughley is slamming Caitlyn Jenner over both her transition and her ESPYs Arthur Ashe Courage Award. Watch below.
The actor-comedian was asked about Jenner’s ESPYs honor on Thursday, hours after the awards, and he argued the former Olympian did not deserve to be equated with Arthur Ashe. Hughley told a photographer, “[Ashe] was a symbol of courage. He fought segregated South, a very segregated profession. He fought AIDs with dignity and honor. And Caitlyn Jenner put on a dress. I don’t think it’s the same thing.”
Hughley argued late college basketball player Lauren Hill, who died of cancer, was more worthy of receiving the Arthur Ashe Courage Award. He added, “I think Arthur Ashe and Caitlyn Jenner have very little in common.” And when asked point-blank if Jenner is a “beautiful woman,” Hughley immediately said no.
“In like Mrs. Doubtfire kind of way. Stop it,” he shot back. Hughley went on to tie in recent criticism of Serena Williams, in which detractors said she looks like a man, and said, “Bruce Jenner looks like ever P.E. teacher I ever had. It’s a weirder thing.”
Hughley’s comments came on the same day director and “Friday Night Lights” creator Peter Berg was slammed for saying Jenner shouldn’t have won the award. He has since backtracked on the remarks. Check out the video of Hughley below, and tell us what you think.
