Diplo Teases New Music With Justin Bieber
Diplo is teasing new music with Justin Bieber. He opens up about their working relationship in an interview on “The Zach Sang Show,” revealing how they started collaborating, what advice they’ve shared, and much more. Watch below!
“I’ve just known Justin [through] Usher. I did ‘Climax’ with Usher, and Justin I met through those sessions,” Diplo revealed when asked how their friendship began. “They were really connected… So I just met him that way, and [his manager Scooter Braun’s] always been a friend of mine. It was pretty simple.”
As for how “Where A U Now” specifically came about, Diplo shared, “It’s such a weird record and Justin was still very much a pop artist. But we kinda just said, hey, we have nothing to lose to do something ridiculous. Everyone kind of benefitted because it was so strange that even if you are — whoever you are, you have to pay attention to that song. So it worked in everybody’s favor.”
“It helped Skrillex, it helped me, it helped Justin. It helped everybody just kinda reach a different level outside of that pop world, outside what the preconceived notions are about what kind of music he makes,” Diplo said. The producer and EDM star also addressed the initial backlash the song received.
Diplo told Sang, “With ‘Where Are U Now,’ that was a dance song, [but] people automatically hated it in the dance community because of Justin, and then they had to eat their words because it became a big song and got played so many times in the parties.”
“So at the end of the day — this is something Justin told me, this is advice that Kanye [West] gave Justin and I’m always thinking about it — he’s like, at the end of the day, as long as you make the great music, no one can hate you anymore,” Diplo said. “If you make great music, that’s all that matters. I think that’s the rule — Everything’s forgiven if you just make great music.”
So, what’s next? Diplo teased, “We’ve done a lot of stuff together that’s unreleased. Before this album, before ‘Where Are U Now,’ I worked on Believe. I did a song with Big Sean… I did a bunch of stuff with him. We did some new [things] that we’re maybe going to put out soon.”
Diplo’s interview was conducted late last week, just days before he, Bieber and Skrillex won “Best Dance Song” at Sunday’s iHeartRadio Music Awards. Check out the photo above and the video below!
