Devon Still ESPYs Video: Leah Still Gets Jimmy V Perseverance Award — WATCH
Devon Still emotionally accepted the Jimmy V Perseverance Award on behalf of his daughter Leah Still at the ESPY Awards on Wednesday. Watch below.
Still, a defensive tackle for the Cincinnati Bengals, has been a pillar of strength over the last year as he watched his 5-year-old battle stage 4 neuroblastoma. But it’s clear where his inspiration came from: Leah herself. The remarkable little girl has inspired millions with spirit throughout her harrowing ordeal.
Leah was in remission as of March, but recently suffered a setback after undergoing a stem cell treatment. She, unfortunately, was not able to make the trip for the ESPYS in Los Angeles. Her father, however, did, and took the stage following an introduction from LeBron James and a presentation narrated by Tate Donovan.
With athletes and celebrities alike teary-eyed in the audience, Still spoke of keeping faith through this heartbreaking journey, and how Leah kept him from giving up. Still expressed gratitude for his colleagues that allowed him to be a “father first,” and “put football second.” He went on to say that while he often looks like a “hero,” its those kids suffering from cancer who are really heroic.
Still’s speech ended with a video message from Leah. The precious child, giving new meaning to “Leah Strong” every day, said “Sorry I couldn’t be there everybody but thank you for supporting me while I beat up cancer. Hey everybody, hey daddy.”
As Gossip Cop reported, the 2014 Jimmy V Perseverance Award was given to Stuart Scott, who, sadly, passed away from cancer in January. The ESPYS are expected to memorialize the late ESPN anchor with a special tribute. Check out the full video of the Still presentation below. Note: Video is no longer available.
