During the interview, Patel discussed his new film, Lion, which is nominated for six Oscars at this year’s Academy Awards. “It’s based on a true story about a young boy called Saroo, who grows up in a very poor background in India,” Patel noted. “One day, he goes scavenging for food on a train with his brother, and they get split apart. He gets locked in this carriage, and by the time he gets out, he’s in another part of the country he doesn’t know.”
Patel continued, “He gets put in an orphanage, where he is adopted by a family in Australia. He grows up there. And this is just when Google Earth had come out, and he decides to try and use this new technology of the time to try and find his birth mother again.” “It’s a crazy story about mothers and sons, and love and family,” he noted.
The actor went on to reveal he is taking his mom as his date to the 2017 Oscars. Patel, however, then discussed a rather awkward encounter between Patel’s mom and Daniel Craig at the BAFTA’s in 2009. “I took her for Slumdog Millionaire, we went to the BAFTA’s in London. She was at the after-party, this mad Indian woman, and a crowd starting forming around her. She was talking to Daniel Craig,” he noted. “She was going on about how much she loves James Bond. She said, ‘Oh my god, you’re my favorite bond, Pierce, I just think you’re fantastic!’ She thought he was Pierce Brosnan. He very graciously corrected her,” Patel joked. Check out the video below!
