During the interview, Kimmel congratulated the actor on the success of the Oscar-nominated Fences. Washington, who produced, directed and starred in the movie, discussed his previous experiences at the Academy Awards. “I was there when I thought I was going to win, and I didn’t. I didn’t think I was going to win and I did. I should have and I did,” he said. “You have to have an even keel about it, you can’t get too high, you can’t get too low.”
Washington went on to talk about how he is preparing for a possible win at this year’s Oscars. “My children suggested that I be prepared, and you really do want to thank certain people.” The actor, however, then confessed to stealing a platter of shrimp from the Academy Awards ceremony after losing out on the prize one year. “I don’t know if I told this story before, but I stole shrimp once,” he joked. “One time I didn’t win, and I was passing catering on the way out. I stole a shrimp platter.”
The actor also discussed his first ever date with his wife, and revealed how the couple still argue over who paid for the date. “I actually paid, but watch what she says,” Washington joked. “OK, this is what happened. I was paying early, and then I was going to splurge and we were going to take a cab. The meter is going, and I’m going, ‘Ooh, how far away does she live?’ So she paid.” Check out the videos below of Washing on “Jimmy Kimmel Live”!
