Demi Lovato Slams Disney Channel For Eating Disorder Joke

Truth rating: 10

(GettyImages.com)

Demi Lovato is blasting her former employer for a joke about eating disorders on the Disney Channel show “Shake It Up.”

Lovato, who has publicly shared her struggles with bulimia, took issue with a character saying, “I could just eat you up, well if I ate.”

“What are we promoting here?” the former “Sonny With A Chance” star asked on Twitter.

Lovato said she finds it “really funny how a company can lose one of their actress’ from the pressures of an EATING DISORDER and yet still make joke[s] about that very disease.”

She also complained that stars of similar shows are “getting THINNER AND THINNER.”

“I miss the days of RAVEN, and LIZZIE MCGUIRE,” Lovato said, referring to past Disney shows that featured curvier actresses like Raven-Symone and Hilary Duff.

When the singer-actress announced she was leaving her Disney show in April to focus on her well-being and her music career, Disney said it supported her choice.

Now it seems the network may have actually learned very little from watching one of its biggest stars suffer.

“Dear Disney Channel, EATING DISORDERS ARE NOT SOMETHING TO JOKE ABOUT,” Lovato admonished.

Perhaps they’re listening now.

What do you think of Lovato’s comments?

100% true , Disney died when Miley and Demi left

  • Zahra

i agree 100%…i LOVE demi im a lovatic nd disney did die when she left….its not right AT ALL that they are jokeing about eating disorders or stariotyping models…..just disgusting…truly appalling

  • Andrew

Considering the episode that she’s talking about aired SO LONG AGO, I don’t know why this is just being brought up now.

  • http://twitter.com/Pinkie1994 Reina

    I totally agree with demi!

  • Allie

    What episode is that from?

  • Monica1493

I agree totally with what Demi Lovato said. Apparently the writers of said show have never had some1 close to them suffer this type of disease. You can’t joke about something that can lead to death. Especially if you don’t know what it’s like to suffer one of these disorders. Please stop the ignorance.

  • Lynn

It doesn’t matter when it aired. She probably just saw it and if it offends her, then it offends her. Who cares how long ago it aired? Just because something aired a while ago, doesn’t mean it’s any less offensive.

  • http://twitter.com/ash_giles Ash Giles

It’s sick to think they used a joke like that..especially since kids can be influenced so easily nowadays. I’m A 16 year old dude I’m insecure about my weight now because of today’s society. Disney should also start hiring actresses that we can actually see…why these girls so skinny :’(

  • Nina

Because no one had a problem with it, until Demi tweeted about it. sheeps.

  • monsterqueen

Why is it that nobody cared about the Shake it Up thing before but now that Demi said something everybody’s like “Ohhhh eff yew Disney.. you suckkkkk!1!!1 Eating disorders arent funnyyyy”

  • http://twitter.com/VBBieber Mallory

I totally agree with Demi. This is just plain wrong. This is not the image Disney should be giving to the young kids of today.

  • Deezzeeee

    what was the joke ?

  • helpful?

When they sneak out to go to Gary’s party.

  • http://www.facebook.com/JazzysaydfukyewhoezCaldwell Jazzmyne Williams Standsalone

because no one watches that show, Demi JUST now saw it and regardless it still isn’t funy

  • ThisIsMe

I agree with Demi. Disney is a great influence to children these days, so they must be careful of what they say on their shows.

  • Tje5979

    Caught a rerun possibly?

  • http://twitter.com/lpbedazzled Lauren Nicole

I guess she just saw it. I take it she doesn’t sit around watching Disney Channel much. And actually, her little sister Madison tweeted about it first. Maybe she saw it, then showed Demi.

  • Allie

    Thank you!!

  • Gemma

I Agree Its Not Just The Fact That They Let Them Say That And Lost Demi To That Very Disease But Its All Kids Under 12 That Watch That Show So Its Promoting Anorexia To Them Some People Are Telling Us It Was Only A Joke And Nothing Bad Was Ment By It But They Still Put It In And It Still Is Giving A Bad Signal If Its Not Worse Losing A Actress From Disney But Promoting The Very Reason She Had To Leave And Get Help For It Is Low Veryyyy Low This Disease Can Lead To Millions Of People (Mostly Kids) To Die Tbh Who Actually Wants To Watch Disney Anymore Since Demi Left Its Going Even More Downhill Since She Left Im Surprised There Still Even A Freakin Channel Anymore Its That Boring

  • Cadycourtright

I’m glad she stood up to it. It was a really stupid move on the writers’ part.

  • Tricia

Most people didn’t know about it.

  • helpful?

when the model said, “I could just eat you up, well if I ate.”

  • Allie

Someone on the show said “I could just eat you up, well if I ate…” and I guess Demi got offended by it or something

  • James

I dunno. Does it matter though?

  • Compulsive

I think she’s just being overly sensitive

  • monsterqueen

Pretty much because she’s acting like a drama queen.

  • Iz

As soon as WWP ends, we can say bye-bye to Disney. It’s only saving grace will be Good Luck Charlie, because its kinda like the old Disney.

  • Di Dianafeiteira

    any clip of it?

  • Anonymous

Sensitive or not, she’s using her voice to be heard. And rightfully so.

  • Seasha

You clearly don’t know what it feels like to suffer from poor body image or you wouldn’t call her a drama queen!

  • meeeeeeeeee

it’s not just on shake it up , they made fun of eating disorder on so random too

  • monsterqueen

Um i do because i have friends like this but they just laugh it off. @_@

  • Ogh

Do you know that a capital letter is just at the beginning of a sentence, or after the name or place of something? Hard on the eyes to read your comment!

  • Dreamcatcher Dreamchaser

Its not just shake it up that made a comment about eating disorders. So random did too, “angus only eats one meal a week.” And they said it like it was something proud. The clip in on youtube. The point is that this shouldn’t be happening, these diseases are so serious and take tons of lifes everyday. They almost took my life and I’m still struggling with excepting that I’m not going to be as skinny as actresses on tv but, all we’re ever told is that the thinner you are the more beautiful you are and that’s just not true. I’m so proud of Demi and her accomplishments and disney should be ashamed of themselves.

  • mike

I’m sorry for what Demi when threw but she really need to focus on her own life and career like she said. It just a joke. I sure disney didn’t mean anything by it. Demi…you really need to check yourself

  • Dee Eugene

I remember that episode. When CeCe and Rocky get caught at Gary’s party, Flynn (CeCe’s little brother) is sitting on a model’s lap and that’s when she says, “You’re so cute. I could eat you up, well if I ate.” The writers of Shake It Up basically used a joke that TV and people still make about female models: that they don’t eat because their job requires them to be thin. I’m not bashing Demi because I love her and even have her latest album, but I think she blew this way out of proportion.

  • Anonymous

I understand that she’s upset. I’ve seen the episode and I wasn’t offended (I’ve dealt with eating disorders very close to me). It was just a small joke, I highly doubt any kids would suddenly want to stop eating because of a line on Shake It Up that wasn’t even said by a main character.

  • Huevond

it’s ok but i remenber that this girl worked for disney so she doesn’t remenber that in her time when she worked for disney they put the model how a teenager should be

  • …..

Disney made fun about an eating disorder. THAT IS NOT SOMETHING TO JOKE ABOUT. NOT EVEN A LITTLE. Disney literally has made me sick….STOP BASHING DEMI FOR AN OPINION!!!

  • J3zz1c8

I used to love Demi. But saying that makes me wanna hate her now. She got a little out of control this time. I mean, I haven’t watched Disney Channel in 3 weeks and 2 days. Disney is in my blood, not literally. But I almost died the time I didn’t get to watch Disney. And when my timeline on Twitter was filled with Demi Lovato and Disney Channel. It made me feel bad. Demi’s getting bitchier than ever now. Just because the company that made you what you are now is joking about something that involves you. You don’t need to fight against what old shows it has and the new shows it does today. So, stfu !

  • Anonymous

She went to rehab for many months because people bullied her for being “to large.” Comments like that probably haunt her and make her think of that. It makes it twice as bad because it’s from her former employer and they are well aware of the fact that she had an eating disorder. Disorders are not something to make jokes about. At all.

  • Compulsive

    wasn’t that demi’s old show?

  • Dude

    Amen brother

  • Allie

Couldn’t have said it better myself

  • James

Does the fact that they didnt know about it till now make it less offensive? Just saying

  • James

Maybe but does it change the fact that it is offensive? I mean thats like saying there was a joke on a televisions show about insulting black people yet no one cared about it until Jesse Jackson brought it up. Does it change the fact that its still offensive? no.

  • James

So you have friends who are insensitive cock ends? Cool bro. Bad ass :)

  • James

Yeah it was just a joke. I mean it’s not like people DIE from eating disorders or anything like that….oh wait…they do. Dumb ass.

  • James

you are so retarded its not even funny.

  • DJSCREWHTOWN

She isn’t going to cut herself or punch Bella Thorne in the face over this is she?

  • Living4DDLovato

You people are idiots. These shows are promoting eating disorders and its just plain wrong. Ive struggled with Anorexia for 3 years and found this extremly offensive and just plain wrong. Demi was standing up and using her voice to say you know what this isnt ohkay. Disney needs to go back to Thats So Raven and Lizzie McQuire when they taught kids that everyone is beautiful and to follow your dreams. Disney channel is sick,

  • Maricela M Guerrero

Maybe they laugh it off to mask their true feelings.

  • Guest

Demi is 100%, eating disorders are nothing to joke about! Beauty comes in all shapes and sizes.

  • Scarlettinaballerina

I can’t believe some people are saying Demi is being a bitch or a drama queen about this. It isn’t right, no matter how small the joke is. She has every right to be offended.

  • James

Yeah cause its not like eating disorders kill people or something. I mean whats wrong with joking about something thats horrific like that? You’re so mentally inept/

  • yoyo

the last three comments make me worried for the world…you all have seriously issues. and J3zz1c8….that comment wasnt even coherent, what are you trying to say???
If there was a joke about racism or down syndrome or cancer, no one would disagree with demi. EATING DISORDERS SUCK. I just got out of treatment yesterday in fact. it sucks.

And you say , “she got a little out of control this time.” and then u say, “i almost died the time i didn’t get to watch disney.” dafuck????????? shut up.

  • ???

Instead of directing it to the Disney Channel, she might wan tto consult the writers and producers of the show. They make majority of the shows in the channel…

  • Mama2Jude1112

I totally agree! Eating disorders are a disease that should not be taken light. Shame on you, Disney!

  • Brooke

You say that because it has never affected you on a personal level. If it did you would not put Demi down. Demi comments because she knows and wants to see them do right. The people that say she shouldn’t comment are the ones out of line because if she doesn’t speak out then who will. She may be saving someone you love and you dont even know it.

  • James

So you hate her because she is speaking out against a joke that is clearly offensive to a LOT of people and flat out says “eating disorders are funny” Really? Well then i guess you would have to get mad at black activists groups that speak out against prejudice that exisists in this world. maybe you should speak out against womens rights groups that fight for equality for everyone. Hell why not speak out against people who are looking to ban the law that says gay marrige is not ok for whatever reason. if you think being a bitch is the same as being opinionated then you’re fucking stupid. Just because a company gave her a chance and put her name out there doesn’t give them the right to poke fun at eating disorders and that doesnt mean a former talent of theirs cant speak out against their stupidity.

    Grow a brain you idiot.

  • dh

nobody likes the new disney anyway! old disney!!! please! we’re getting older!

  • James

Please don’t be her fan anymore. Please? We don’t need morons like you in her fan base.

  • James

Well thats cause you’re a dumb bitch. Do the world a favor and walk off a bridge love

  • James

No but she might punch you for being a fucking moron. And for that, I might cheer her on :)

  • James

    In otherwords…Disney Channel. Dumb ass.

  • unbrokenbb

since when is standing up to the truth getting out of control? she just doesn’t want others to through what she had gone through, that’s all.

  • http://www.facebook.com/JykevaaOnRakkaus Nicole Marie Lavorino

I am disgusted with disney at the moment This is the 2nd “joke” they made.

  • unbrokenbb

yup!! she is just sayinn it like how it is.

  • unbrokenbb

maybe not, but that doesn’t mean it’s still is ryt.

  • unbrokenbb

yup!! it’s just a crap now. Demi rules!

  • unbrokenbb

    it does not!!

  • unbrokenbb

    it’s possible

  • unbrokenbb

    yup. so do i

  • unbrokenbb

b/c she is our role model.

  • unbrokenbb

realy? realy? realy? is that suppose to be funny?

  • Glittermusic7

Don’t call Demi a drama queen! SHe has the right to be offended, I mean….I am!!!

  • Pw

She IS directing it to Disney Channel – obviously, the writers and producers ARE Disney Channel. God, people are so dumb these days.

  • Samantha

If I was watching the show, I wouldn’t think it promoted an eating disorder. If anything, I would think it’s making fun of models, or people who thrive to be skinny, by not eating. AKA, criticizing people who think not eating will make them thinner.

  • Dark angel

I find it “interesting” that Disney’s actresses are now skinnier than Miley, Demi, Hillary Duff, Raven-Symone, Jennifer Stone, etc. I also find it “interesting” or somehow “suspicious” that after the show “So Raven” was cancelled, Disney Channel never produced another show in which an african-american girl was the main character. In a nutshell, Disney’s going downhill. Big time.

  • Anon

I think Disney Channel has gone downhill, but I also think that the actresses are skinnier because they hire girls that are like, 12. Sure there are girls thicker than the current actresses that are 12, but still. I don’t expect a 12 year old to look like a [growing] woman.

  • Emma

u put that in a perfect way i couldn’t say that any other way!

  • Emma

This is very true yet should still be discused it is a horrible example for young girls!

  • Stickup

You said it’s to mask their true feelings, that’s what everybody else did, then Demi spoke up about it, when other people were too scared to speak up about it. Obviously if one of your idols said something, you’d go along with it. But if you want to go ahead and join Disney in thinking that eating disorders are funny, then go ahead and be an absolute insensitive cock.

  • Stickup

Am I the only one that’s reading this like a robot because of how hard it is to read?

  • Emma

I understand how it might be more offensive to her having gone through it but i know it was noticed before demi tweeted about it i certainly noticed it and i think she was just trying to fix the way young girls think it could scar them and they could think they have to hurt their bodies the look smaller!!!

  • Stickup

Which is why she’s so mad at Disney too.for pretty much promoting eating disorders.

  • Stickup

Eating disorders are hard enough to deal with as it is without insensitive pricks like you in the world.

  • lovaticlifebaby

    ur just an asshole!

  • Anon

Yeah but they’re telling kids it’s ok not to eat to be thin, which is not right at all. I personally thought disney had a bit of class… Sorry, that one went out of the window when they made talking fish that went to school underwater ><

  • Lovatic

Omg you was saying exactly that up there! !!

  • Iygjyg

Couldn’t have said it better myself. Amen.

  • Lina Williams

I’m so happy she did this! Disney went soooo far downhill. PROUD DAY TO BE A LOVATIC!!! <3

  • livingunbroken

How often do people that are of age to truly understand this shit just randomly watch this show?

  • olive

demi lovato is so annoying. you didn’t fucking serve in ‘nam, you just stopped eating and went to rehab, DITCHED disney (they didnt ‘lose’ you) and now she bitches about everything like she’s Mother Teresa. And for the record, So Random is actually really funny for a kids show and is 138548946 times better.

  • http://www.zimbio.com/Skin+Care/articles/ZTX_eWZnwuv/Pure+Collagen+Skin+Care+Review+Buy Pure Collagen

I think they’re not as bad as Miley Cyrus but give them another year or so in the limelight and they will be.

  • http://twitter.com/SariRainMJ Sari Kang

Except that those comments aren’t just on Shake It Up; they’re everywhere. And the influence of the media IS part of what makes kids develop eating disorders. Disney should be more responsible. Considering they’ve taken issue with showing certain things on their shows, and that eating disorders and body image are both big issue recently, that’s very uncharactaristically careless of them.

  • cmednc

yeah what the hell what are you 12? Even then what the hell? Also, you have forgotten to use punctuation.

  • Aaria

Personally, I feel like all of this was just blown WAY our of proportion. As it was when Demi went too rehab. DEMI LOVATO IS NOT GOD. I sympathize with her having gone through so much. I too suffer from body image problems, but when is she going too shut up about it? I truly don’t believe that she is ‘healed’ or however you’d put it. If she truly was she’d let it go and not talk about it EVERY chance she gets. She makes sure that you know she had problems. We all have problems here and there, why drag it on? Yes, the writer’s of the episode probably should not have put that in, but the episode is ancient and no one blew it up this big until now. And for those of you saying that you ‘hate’ Disney and your ‘never watching it again’ where you saying that same thing when Disney pretty much ‘made’ or ‘introduced’ you to Demi Lovato? How about when she made ALL of that money off of that VERY company? And furthermore Demi Lovato punched someone. Are we saying that it’s okay to promote violence as long as you don’t have any eating disorder? She should try and be more positive or maybe actually THINK about the things she tweets before she does a little more. Some of you won’t understand where I’m coming from, but some of you may. This world is seriously twisted. Sorry for the rant.

  • Sarah

Right. All shapes and ALL SIZES. I can understand her having an issue with a joke about EDs– I don’t think the joke in question is that big of a deal (dont watch the show, but the joke doesn’t seem to be condoning EDS?) but I can see her point. However, I think her comment about current Disney girls being too tiny is pretty bitchy. I have several friends and family members who are naturally tiny. Some are athletic, but some just have insane metabolisms and eat more than I do but just can’t gain weight. So they shouldn’t be hired as actresses on the Disney channel because their weight is too low through no fault of their own…? Yes, being anorexic is unhealthy, but being morbidly obese is as well. I love Raven, I think she is and was beautiful, but you can’t say she was healthy at her highest weight. Who’s to say the Shake it Up girls aren’t naturally tiny? If she’s gonna tout the fact that everyone’s beautiful, you have to include skinny people as well as not-so-skinny.

  • Aaria

That’s true, but is she also teaching us to jump down everyone’s throat who says anything that can be taken out of context? I’m all for not promoting eating disorders, but it’s all so blown out of proportion till it’s not even funny.

  • http://twitter.com/SariRainMJ Sari Kang

In A.N.T Farm, China Anne McClaine is the main character, and she’s an African-American girl.

  • annomous

you know, what makes me really sick truly, is all your guy’s comments to each other. even to the lovatics and the fans of demi. every single one of you is just spittin names and beatin each other senseless with all these cussin words. bullying will NEVER end because people not only have to respect the person but respect each others opinions and judging by what i’m reading, especially to you lovatics who support demi, that’ll never happen. to the demi fan’s she would truly be disappointed.

as for my two cents on the situation, i stand with demi in the fact that, it’s just a sick joke. a really sick joke on disney’s part. i’ve noticed it on shake it up and so random. i’ve stopped watching disney, it’s not the same without raven and all the good shows. demi’s just expressed her opinion that’s why ya’ll are takin it out of proportion because most of ya’ll don’t accept it as just an opinion and proceed to judge her. i’m proud of her. she’s standing up for what SHE believes in. kudo’s to you demi.

I just watched the episode and personally I have never struggled with any form of eating disorder but my best friend is struggling with one currently and I know how hard it is on her and it has also become very hard on me. I am scared every day that it will be the last time I see her, its inexplicable how painful it is. In the episode they idolize this model and after she says the comment “I could just eat you up, well if I ate” my heart immediately sank. Then the group proceeded to laugh about it. If girls on Disney Channel think cool people don’t eat and I as a young girl saw that, I wouldn’t want to eat so I could be cool like them! I am thankful that at this age I am not influenced by that type of advertisement but I know as a young viewer I could have been. Demi spoke out and because of that a PR for Disney said that they are taking the two shows off for further review. This was the right thing to do, it eliminates the things already presented and will caution Disney on future episodes to deviate from that form of a joke. It may have become a big ordeal but this is a big ordeal that society must overcome so that the human race can remain healthy and not believe that what they see in the mirror isn’t good enough. Because EVERYONE is beautiful and EVERYONE deserves a chance to reach their dreams. No matter what the number on the scale. My friend watches America’s Next Top Model on a regular basis, which makes her feel even worse about her body. This is what society is doing. Making unhealthy, beautiful. I refuse to give in to this and I will stand up for it. Right by the side of my idol and savior, Demi Lovato.

yea your right, she hasn’t. she’s still a growin teen tho figurin things out. she punched someone and REALIZED her mistakes and went to rehab. i agree with you tho, she should go with this in a positive way. idk, this world is just messed up.

  • Dee Eugene

No, society made the stereotype that models don’t eat.

  • Shaleah Taliaferro

I don’t think she’s being a bitch at all. But, I feel as though she is a little over sensitive. I don’t think little kids will actually stop eating just because of that episode. That’s just my opinion.

  • Lea

*claps* Wow. I agree with everything you just said.

  • Guest

Thank you Sarah! Finally someone out there see’s a different side to this. I’ve noticed there are some people on twitter who are a little offended on one specific tweet Demi wrote. I respect Demi’s opinion and I agree with the whole idea about not promoting “Eating Disorders.” I think what she is doing is great but her saying: “And is it just me or are the actress’ getting THINNER AND THINNER” has offended a few young girls including me. She may not mean this or may have re-worded it wrong, but some people took these words as if its WRONG to be THIN also. In addition, these new generation of Disney actresses are young! Perhaps, most are younger than 14. It should not matter that they are thin because they are still growing! But I know Demi truly means that everyone is beautiful in all shapes and sizes but I personally think she should not have mentioned that. My younger sister saw her tweets and it made her feel bad to be “thin” afterwards, even though she is naturally skinny and perfectly healthy.

  • http://twitter.com/gookygox Holly Christine

Good on Demi. There was nothing inappropriate about her Tweets. She was offended by something that is not something to joke about and said something about it. And for that matter, good on Disney for immediately pulling the episodes for review. It doesn’t matter if EDs are a stereotype, they should NEVER be promoted. Just because these are comedy shows does not mean these jokes are not offensive. I’m certain that there was no intent to be offensive, but Disney is doing the right thing by acknowledging the seriousness of this issue and not going on the defensive. Sometimes that’s the best thing you can do when you’ve made a mistake.

  • Malia

God knows I love Demi, but I honestly think she’s overreacting. But I do agree that it’s not something that should be taken lightly and that it shouldn’t be joked about.

  • James

So saying something like “Eating disorders is funny” is blowing things out of proportion? Really? I didn’t know that. I guess I should make a racial joke in front of my friend who happens to be aferican american and say something like “All people are greasy niggers because of the fried chicken they eat.” But hey its just a joke right? and getting mad at that is only blowing shit out of proportion right? Oh please.

  • James

They made that stereotype because a LOT of the times its true. I mean a model suffering from an EATING DISORDER? THats just unheard of! You really are stupid you know that?

  • James

So wait are you telling me that Model’s don’t suffer from eating disorders? That its not common for a model to suffer with body images where she literally spends days puking her guts out for the sake of vanity? You mean to tell me that the stereotype is NOT the fucking disorder? Gee I must have been imagining all those reports of Models dropping dead and dying of bad nutrition. I must have imagined the entire terri schiavo incident then right?

    Moron…

  • James

Oh yeah its just a joke. I mean its not like people DIE from eating disorders right? idiot…

  • James

Hate to break it to you but its NOT natural for a girl like Bella THorne to be that thin. a Normal Vibrant 13 year old with a healthy appitite and normal metabolism does NOT look like that. Someone with insane metabolism as you put it would not look that sickly thin. Someone with strong metabolism would actually look HEALTHY. Fit or at least NORMAL. I dont know where you thought Demi said they couldn’t be actresses. She never said that. And only an idiot with a morbid sense of vanity would see Raven as morbidly obese. She was never that fat to be considered unhealthy. Again sorry but no. a healthy 13 year old does not look like BElla Thorne or Keira Knightley. You are wrong.

  • James

I’ll say the samething to you. She was never that fat to be considered unhealthy. Again sorry but no. a healthy 13 year old does not look like BElla Thorne or Keira Knightley. You are wrong.

  • Elinesbemol

So true!! Disney doesn’t show the normal girls, just those skinny tops

  • Brandie

honestly disney has went so down hill- same with nicklodean. They completely changed child humor, so far that most kids dont understand the joke in the first place. There making there jokes far to appropriate for the child brain, leading them to one grow up faster, ask there parents a lot more questions that they shouldn’t yet, and now eating disorders? i understand what disney was trying to do, make a joke, but clearly its not funny and they went to far. The writers found it funny because models are “suppose” to be skinny now-a-days, and i think thats what they were leading the joke more too because they chose to have there modeling career. demi didnt choose to have a eating disorder, the pressure of being skinny did. Any model could drop and quit but as big of a star as demi is, thats pretty much impossible. disney seriously needs to pick up there game because now that wizards is done with, all they have left is good luck charlie, which now that there having another baby, i dont see that going much farther. every disney show now you have to have some sort of talent, like singing, dancing, acting, name one show that doesnt have a talent…. im sorry but how can any kid exactly relate to that? not many at all. fix things disney, or you’ll loose more kids because your lack of thought into shows.

remember these shows? maybe you can get GOOD ideas from remebering these.

    Lizzie Mcquire
    Thats So Raven
    Boy Meets World
    Full House
(the first few seasons) of Hannah Montana
    ex.,

the keyword is connections to the people its about, theres no connection to any of your shows what so ever.

I agree with Demi that eating disorders are NOT funny at all, many people die from it and that the new Disney stars are getting to be a lot thinner. I also agree that I miss the old Disney shows like That’s So Raven and Lizzie McGuire. But I think she kind of misunderstood the joke. The girl in the episode who says, “I could just eat you guys up, you know… If i ate”, I think she’s like a model or something. Society has a stereotype of models being thin, because that’s what everyone expects them to be, and what the models themselves and the modeling companies expect them to be. So in this “joke”, I think the writers were trying to address the stereotype in a kind of funny way. I don’t think they were trying to joke about eating disorders, much less promote them. That’s just wrong. It was probably an unintentional thing, but they should be a little bit more responsible on what they put as “jokes” on their shows, so this kind of thing doesn’t happen again. I love Demi to death and I hope she is doing well with her new career (:

  • Hannah

To be honest I am jot a fan of Demi but she has a point. Disney are getting old. They now promote being stick thin. What happened to Raven? Disney is plastic now. And there is a significant lack of acting talent.

  • Ghmjhgfrewhgtrew

please disney has gone downhill ever since their real superstar has decided to leave. i mean why do you think they are making their old animated movies into 3D nowadays? because they need to do some damage control before they go downhill bigtime!

  • http://twitter.com/MayaaJam Maya Jamaleddine

It doesnt matter when it aired. All that matters is that Disney, with or without knowing it, is promoting things like that. I doubt you can give me ONE show that has a curvy girl as the main character.

  • Compulsive

Fuck off you dick. Allie’s right

  • Kontrol

Man this political correctness crap is hitting all new levels of annoying. Now comedy writers have to worry about offending people with eating disorders.(just like that, a new class of “victim” is born) I guess it shouldn’t surprise me…since anorexia is a unique “disease” where the inflicted are encouraged to blame everyone but themselves) for their problems. Oh how EVIIIIIIIL the world is because we’re inclined to find slim more attractive than fat. The sad whining of Demi Lovato is so incredibly stupid, I wonder how she can be so damned sanctimonious about it.

  • Shut up

And there is shows that say sex related jokes but you don’t see people complaining about that?

  • Tate

Shut the fuck up. You don’t have to fucking bring black people into this.

  • Raiden

Disney died long before that. I feel sorry for the young generation

Gossip Cop do you think you can find a clip from Shake it Up that she is referring to. I watch that show all the time with my child, she loves dancing and the characters. But I don’t remember seeing that joke.

  • Xoshariaxo

Omg the model said that because models has to stay in good shape just like in so random angus is also a model…if you find it offensive fine but it wasnt that offensive… I’m sorry but if Demi is still that sensitive or weak about her weight maybe she should just go back to therapy or rehab

  • flowersarepertty

I personally thought that there was no problem what so ever with that line. The show is a show just like any other. If it wouldve been SWAC saying it while she was there she wouldnt have said a thing. I understand people have eating disorders and its not funny but in this case it meant no harm. People do talk like that in reality, depending on who you know. My friend has an eating disorder and is super skinny. She actually is a huge LOVATIC and messaged me when she saw her tweets. She freaked out and was like “Okay that was little too far, you dont slam your old company like that in public. I dont slam my old modeling companies! Especailly publicly it was unnecessary and shouldve been done in private. Besides its an old show and its already aired a million times. No one had a problem before, I didnt and I have the biggest problems. Its a show, its fake, theyre not promoting anything. If anything that 70s show, south park, family guy, the simpsons, jersey shore, the hangover all should be banned if thats the case. But no for that its okay to go partying and almost killing yourself with drugs, and its okay to sleep around. At least thats what society is portraying, so I think if this show gets taken down for one line so should all the other shows for the entire episodes.” That was said by a girl who is super tall and thin and is going through procedures. Also no matter what any rep says no matter what demi says or disney or her mom no one really knows why she was in rehab. She couldve very well also been doing drugs and alcohol. Now dont yell at me! Im not accusing her but it is possible! And its okay i mean being in the business is hard and tough and stressful and she got help which is what matters. But anyhow i 100% am behind disney and have no problem with their shows especially if my friend doesnt. OH AND TO ALL THE LOVATICS WHO WERE BEING MEAN TO DAVIS please dont make a fool of yourselves again. That was absolutley ridiculous! I dont care what he did or said hes 9 leave him alone. Demi is against cyber bullying so why were you sending him death threats and stuff. Seriously ashamed to call myself a lovatic that night. PEACE!

  • Aleisha

I kind of agree with nina.. If demi hadnt mentioned it no one would care.. This is because as soon as a celebrity mentions something like this people make a big deal. An i know this because of the pun “You are what you eat.” ie people make jokes about eating habbits all the time. While im not saying its right because it isnt im saying that i dont think the writter meant any harm or even realised they were joking about sed “eating disorder” i watch shake it up all the time an i think what was said was taken out of context i mean look at rocky she doesnt look anorexic. I know the damage eating disorders can have my own mother had bulemia. An i got teased at school and called anorexic because im naturally skinny.

  • Liz

Why do people always assume children watching Disney Channel are completely incompetent? The majority of people watching shows like So Random and Shake it Up are around 11-12, and I certainly knew about eating disorders then. The fact is, eating disorders are rampant among our society, and its victims are becoming younger and younger every day. Actually, most eating disordered habits begin at around that age, so Disney, a channel that parents assume is safe and friendly is joking about something as serious as anorexia.

  • Kara

I feel like this person is just trolling

  • Lisa

Sex doesn’t take people’s lives. Sex isn’t a serious mental disorder. Sex doesn’t torture millions of girls and boys around the world. Sex is natural and is for pleasure. STARVING yourself is a slow and painful (physically and mentally) way of dying. And this is DISNEY channel. Disney is geared towards children, have you ever seen them make a sex related joke? A joke about teen pregnancy? A joke about homosexuality? Race? Religion? Depression? No. So why would they make a joke about anorexia, the mental disorder that KILLS more people than ANY other? It was ignorant and very immature of the writers, and the fact that Disney aired these shows in the first place was of very poor taste. I, myself, suffer from an eating disorder and when I first saw the episode of Shake it Up, it made everyone in the room extremely uncomfortable. Disney isn’t supposed to do that. Disney is supposed to be a feel good channel. It’s supposed to rear children towards becoming well-rounded young adults, not feed right into the image that society has already been engrainging into our heads.

  • Livie H2o Cheer

now they r loosing selena too !

  • Bballchamp2511

I agree with that completely! I struggle with weight myself although my friends say I’m skinny they don’t understand not to joke about stuff like this I’m scared to be fate because my friends pick on people for it so instead I just watch them eat and not gain anythin whil I don’t eat or puke it up and nobody knows it

  • Lucas Gravely

Disney’s channel’s treatment of nerdy and socially awkward characters whom I identified with is what lead me to believe that I deserved to be bullied growing up. So fuck you Disney channel.

  • Disneyrules

WOO HOO go disney!!! i love the company but hate the stars-theyre all so nasty and disgusting and cant wait to suffer in hell lol

  • Disgusted

demi is a nasty pig, joe is a hoe, miley is a …..nuff said, BUT they cant help it theyre weak and born sinfull and “EVERYBODY does what they do” and “thats what ‘normal teens do”…….what a sick world we live in…drunks, hoes…..i honestly cant believe people i mean queers worship these demons….theyre so sick! and so are most of you thats the ONLY reason you love them cuz you are JUST like them. tell the dev i said hi when alllyaall get back to where your from!

  • Blwritergirl2

Well I don’t watch Disney Channel anymore but what I’m getting out of this is a stereotype that says models don’t eat. This isn’t necessarily always true. Models are put on a special diet to help them maintain their image. Disney went downhill years ago, not just when Demi Lovato left. However, I’m glad she finally realized that Disney is a money-making greedy company who only seeks to make money off of naive teenage girls who really want to be famous. I believe that Disney is just a show where teens go to find quick fame. For any person who wants to take on acting you shouldn’t audition for the Disney Co, because they will try to shape you into someone you’re not and slowly turn you into plastic. It’s good that Demi was smart enough to leave unlike the other dumb ones who are still working with Disney just because they want fame. Sexualizing young girls and making them feel insecure about themselves is not worth the fame. Especially if it’s for Disney channel. I see the Disney stars get younger and younger each year and all of them look older than they actually are. Including Shake it up and that other show with the black girl. They have to be about twelve, thirteen years old and they’re already wearing makeup. That is just crazy. I miss the old Disney stars. Kayla Pratt, Hilary Duff, Raven Symone, Tia and Tamara etc. They all looked like normal people who didn’t have to change their image for their show. As time progressed Disney slowly became a teen pop music channel. It’s absurd. I wish Walt Disney was still alive then we’d be watching clasic Mickey mouse cartoons and wouldn’t have to worry about sexualizing young girls into sluts. Just look at Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez, Debby Ryan etc. They all look different after Disney transformed them. Disney is brainwashing little kids. I’m glad I grew up with the late 90′s and early 2000′s shows like Boy Meets World, Sister Sister, Smart Guy, Even Stevens, Don’t Look under the Bed, That’s so Raven, Lizzie McGuire, Famous Jett Jackson, Teen Witch, Suzie Q, Once upon a star, Doug, Mickey Mouse, Proud Family, PepperAnn, etc. Forget all those new lame shows on Disney Channel. Those aren’t classics.

  • Susanvidal

actually i’m 11 and that triggered my anorexia (which i have had for 11 months) BIG TIME ! just cuz it wasnt sed by main characters doesnt mean its not offensive i was about to recover then that aired and i had an even HARDER time recovering cuz i kept thinking ” you wanna be pretty like her? then stop eating like a pig!” it is truly sad that disney is now saying that im 11 and i was only 40 lbs super skinny i wish i wasnt ruled by this eating disorder i can luckily ovbrcome them cuz of advice from demi but dont go around thinking its easy ignoring them i think to myself ” gosh why cant i just be normal and live a happy life like most kids my age” im not trying to be mean or anything just that that is what happened in my case

  • A-Rae

I had a problem with it when I watched the show, ever since then I refuse to watch it.

  • A-Rae

or a curvy girl that doesn’t act stupid or sit around talking or thinking about food all the time. I have a real problem with that as well

  • Rai_ane2012

I definitely agree about the skinny girls bit… that’s so raven was my favourite disney show of all time and i loved Raven’s and Hilary’s beautiful curves. Now you got girls like bella thorne, zendaya and china mcclain lookin like they’re ten and on some old diet. Now stefanie scott and allie deberry have healthy sizes.Deni’s got an awesome body as well… but seriously disney itself has gottn crappy and i feel real sorry for the kids born in the 2000′s. And they should play some reruns of Raven dammit

  • Anonymous

When Demi was on Disney there were comments about anorexia and she never bothered to stand up for it then.

  • http://profile.yahoo.com/LMBF3TWTIYB26HBOEBHOFJNBYI Bean

Demi’s old show was called “Sonny with a Chance”. It was a show about the filming of “So Random”. When Demi left, they no longer had Sonny for “Sonny with a Chance”, so they just used the original skits and put them out as a new show in itself.

  • MidnightD

I have an eating disorder and the funny part is I could give a shit less that they made a joke about it. People take this too seriously and need to calm the hell down. Go eat a cheeseburger and enjoy yourselves instead of complaining and ranting on the internet. Noone cares.

  • chris wilson

really, she got mad at a joke, that wasnt even funny. i love demi, but seriously, it’s just a joke. and it’s from the worst tv show ever. nothing that you should get mad over
you should feel srry for the writer’s that that is the best they came up with

  • Zoe Mawr

As an anorexic, I find it comforting when shows make jokes like this. It makes eating disorders seem more like a part of the real world… other ED suffers will probably know what I mean when I say it’s like living inside your own head with just a calculator for company :L

The So Random one is awful though, “Angus only eats one meal a week!” Said as if it’s something to be proud of!!

The thing is, where people draw the line will always be unique, and practically most jokes offend someone. I think most shows should be allowed to get away with joking about whatever the hell they like, and if you’re offended, don’t watch (that probably shouldn’t be true with children’s/teenager’s shows like Disney ones though.

  • Melissa

    She’s right.
