Demi Lovato and Miley Cyrus’ days as BFFs are long gone. In fact, in an interview on 103.3 AMP Radio’s “The TJ Show” Monday morning, Lovato said she and Cyrus are merely “acquaintances” these days, and gave a very telling reason why. Listen below.

During the interview, host TJ Taormina opened up the phone line for listeners’ to ask questions, and one caller said to Lovato, “I’m a big fan of you and of Miley Cyrus, so I’m just wondering what your relationship with her is like.” The singer-actress hesitated in her reply, saying, “Um…yeah…that, um…we’re, we’re like, we’re acquaintances.”

Taormina turned the spotlight back on the caller, asking the girl if there was “some kind of drama that was reported,” but the fan said she knew them to be close friends before Cyrus’ “radical phase” and “hadn’t seen anything recently,” so she “was just curious.” Lovato then said, “Yeah, it’s life, and people change, and, you know, I don’t have anything in common with her anymore, and I wish her all the best.”

As fellow Disney Channel stars, Cyrus and Lovato were seemingly inseparable when their respective careers began to skyrocket. (They are pictured together above in 2009.) In 2012, Lovato admitted to Seventeen that they would have “brutal” fights but always quickly make up. And last year, Lovato did a few interviews in which she defended the controversial Cyrus’ transformation, saying that “the world kind of needs to get over the fact that she was Hannah Montana,” and noting, “Miley has been one of my best friends growing up, and I’m happy for her.”

But things changed last December, a short time after those interviews, when Cyrus’ best friend Cheyne Thomas mocked Lovato’s history of drug abuse. Lovato and Thomas feuded on Twitter, and she seemingly took a dig at Cyrus, tweeting, “You are who your friends are.” Their paths have wildly diverged since then, with Cyrus embracing partying to a large extent while the sober Lovato stepped back. There hadn’t been any indication as to status of the pair’s friendship in recent months, until now, when a random person in Boston just got Lovato to spill on the radio. Listen to the new interview below, and tell us what you think of Lovato’s latest comments. Her remarks about Cyrus begin at the 4:25 mark.
