Demi Lovato Opens Up on Katie: My Body Issues Started When I Was Still in Diapers

(Disney-ABC Domestic Television)

Demi Lovato opens up about her ongoing struggle with body issues during an upcoming appearance on “Katie,” where she reveals her insecurities started at just 3 years old.

“I remember being 3 years old in a diaper and rubbing my hand over my stomach,” Lovato says, “and I remember thinking in my head ‘I wonder if one day this will ever be flat?’”

Lovato’s misconceptions about her body, as well as bullying from peers who called her “fat,” led “The X Factor” judge to battle with bulimia, cutting, and depression.

Of the teasing, Lovato says, “It played more of a toll on me than if I was physically abused in school. ”

“I’ve always said I wished that they had just hit me in the face and gotten it over with because what they said to me sticks to me to this day and it [turned] me into the person I am today,” she tells Katie Couric.

Of course, Lovato herself ended up hitting someone else in the face, her backup dancer, during an altercation in 2010.

Calling the incident “a huge mistake,” she admits, “I wasn’t really in control of my emotions at the time and I was just out of control and there’s no excuse for it but it definitely showed everyone I needed to get help and I think two days later I was checking into rehab.

Earlier this week, it was announced Lovato will serve as an ambassador for Secret deodorant’s “Mean Stinks” anti-bullying campaign.

Lovato’s full interview on “Katie” will air on Monday.

Come on! Be serious! How on Earth can her insecurities start at 3 years old? 1) she would never remember that now and 2) how would she know what fat was at 3? This is getting out of control!!!

  • dwefferi

Fuck off. i remember shit from when i was two. barely, but I do remember. You don’t know her life.

  • MarHead14

that’s ridiculous! What happens is maybe people have told you the same story over and over again and you start to think that it’s your own memories when it is not.

  • Naz

Actually, my brother developed weight issues when he was around 3 or 4 years old. I’m 11 years older than him and it was horrible to see. He’s call himself ‘fat’ when he’d eaten a lot and his little belly stuck out a little bit.
Maybe it was because he heard me call myself fat, I don’t know. But whatever the reason, it DID happen. He’s now in his early teens and he still has moments when he feels fat – but he’s actually way too skinny. He doesn’t have an eating disorder but he does have some isses with food.
    It’s very sad.

  • Goooooner

You don’t know what these people remember. Just chill and move on. Your spitefulness isn’t valued here. Nor is it welcomed.

  • Brianna Cocuzzo

If a memory is really emotional and you were 2 or 3, you can remember it.
I remember my brother being born and I was two…

Okay, she needs to stop playing the sympathy card and just shut it for a change.

Everyone has insecurities, it’s what makes us human.

  • Arcachnar

You are wrong. IF it was a strong emotion that had a really big impact on someone’s life, then the person probably remember it very well. Therefore, Demi could remember this too well.

  • Matt

So she should stop being REAL talking about REAL issues to help her fans and other girls her age just cause you think bullying is no big deal? Clearly what she went they is serious. Insecurities and bullying are different. Just cause we are human don’t give someone the right to torture someone mentally and physically. At least she’s talking about real things kids her age can relate to that shit like what she spent on a car. And she has the talent to back it up. Katie asked her the questions so take it up with her.

  • Maria

Uhm, no she didn’t. No one is that insecure about their bodies that young, at that age she’s only *just* learned to recognize her own reflecion in a mirror. Jeez…

  • Jennifer

No, I think what she’s saying is people get tired of the whining after a while. These people have it all – money, fame, whatever they want and people falling all over them to make sure they don’t lack for anything. Sure, they have issues. Don’t we all. Money can’t buy you happiness, but you better believe it can make up for a mountain of shit in your life. There are, literally, millions of people in this world who would take on her problems and trade her for her lifestyle in a nanosecond.

  • Mercy Manson

3 yrs. old??? Gimme a break! I can barely remember kindergarden! She ‘s just blaming anything or anybody, rather that take reponsibility for her own actions Honestly, Who the F%&K cares. I am sooo tired of hearing about it. And I am not even a fan. I know shes from Disney, that’s about it. Grow up, but better yet, STFU.

  • Arcachnar

Wait. Just because you cannot remember kindergarten, you assume that others cannot do this as well? Not a good assumption. If the event (as Demi had) is big enough to have an emotional impact on your life, then you certainly can remember that. Most people can remember the death of a family member or the birth of their sibling.
She has taken responsibility. Did not she go to rehab to get help? Moreover, that she is helping people who have the same issues of what she had?

  • Lori

    @MercyManson777:disqus
Really you can’t remember kindergarden cause I can remember being in pre-school and even things before that. So get over yourself. Just because you and the other people on this board don’t have long-term memory doesn’t mean other people don’t. I too can remember being that age and thinking I’m fat, and I still deal with it to this day

  • Matt

Oh because someone has fame and money that’s suppose to cute their mental insecurities? You’re dumb.

  • Carie

Actually I was. You can’t speak for everyone. I remember at just three I thought I was ugly and remember being bullied by kids at the playground. Unless you are in her rain you can’t say she’s lying

  • Arcachnar

@Jennifer You’re wrong. IF you had look more into this subject, then you would have known that even with all the money, fame et al in someone’s entire life this does not diminish the big emotional issues that he or she may have that have plagued his or her entire life. They would be normal than rather rich and famous.
As you may should have known that these issues are not like the flu, but will stay forever. My mother has bipolar as well. (That’s why I know what I am talking about) I can full hearty say that it is NOT a picnic or nice to see a loved one like this. (My family and I were not bullied or cutting though, but I know people who were) Trust me, you will chance your attitude if it happens to you.
Trade with her? Are you real? Do you really think that someone wants to have the same issues, just to be rich and famous? That does not make any sense.
Like Matt said, Demi speaks up about her issues and does not hide it. Why? This is to help others with the same issues! She even has set up (or promoting) some anti-bullying organizations to end bullying and to give information about the consequences of it.
Whining? Not even close. Demi talks really maturely about how it used to be. Besides, people interviewed her and asked about this.
Advise: Do some research about this, before posting here.

  • Matt

Thank you I fully agree. Everything you said is well said. At least Demi is DOING something positive with her life. She admitted she needed help and is actually one of the realest teen stars out there I have so much respect for her. No one can determine what someone else remembers. I remember shit from when I was even a BABY. the human brain is a powerful thing. She is helpin youth her age and girls with insecurities that’s why she has so many fans. Cause they can relate to her. She is a girl acting like “miss perfect” she’s Ben tanglable and relatable. She doesn’t even talk about it unless they being it up. So she isn’t Doug anything wrong. I have a lot of respect for her. She looks great now and healthy and I hope she continues to help other girls.

  • rockyv

If she was thinking about anything at 3 years old it was probably about how she was going to get the American side of the border and not about her belly.

  • David

You dumb bitch she was born AMERICAN. You are stupid.

  • Setra

This was a great interview and I appreciated hearing Demi’s story first hand. I hadn’t realized she had gone through all of that. I’m hoping a lot of young people were able to see this interview and take something away from it. This interview gave me and my DISH coworkers plenty to talk about. Luckily I recorded it on my Hopper because when I played back I was able to start watching on my living room TV and then continue watching on any TV in my house right where I left off.

  • James

So Money means that her issues should all go away right? Last I
check mental disorders and sickness doesn’t exclude anyone with a
steady income. Also Money and fame doesn’t guarantee happiness. So
Yeah. You suck at common sense.

  • Cierra;

This is the exact point she’s proving. She’s putting herself out there for the world to hear her story, whether you find it “a big deal” or not someone else may. She’s not seeking attention for personal gain, she is sharing her story so that people are aware that they are not alone. Everyone has insecurities, and everyone is human. Exactly, you are correct. Many young girls/boys feel that people displayed in the media don’t have insecurities of their own, and that they’re the “perfect” imagine and should strive to be as they are. But that isn’t so, and Demi is throwing herself out there to display to others struggling with similar issues that there is a way through it, and that they aren’t alone. Demi isn’t seeking sympathy from the world, she’s giving it.

  • http://twitter.com/ironduck Addie/Annie D

Actually, I was merely stating that I am sick of seeing her everywhere with the same story. No need to keep publishing something to the media when you’ve already done it more than twice.
