Demi Lovato says her newly released song, “Cool For The Summer,” is more “provocative” than her past music because she’s now more “badass.” “It’s basically going to be your song of the summer,” says Lovato on Wednesday’s “On Air With Ryan Seacrest.” “It’s very fun. It’s definitely more provocative. I just think the more you listen to it, the more things it can mean.” Watch her interview below.

Lovato explains that “Cool For The Summer,” about a steamy summer romance, is different from her past records because she’s ready to show everyone what a “badass” she can be. “It’s like I’ve spent so long just kind of people-pleasing, making everybody happy with being the best role model I can be,” says Lovato, adding, “At the end of the day, yes, I am outspoken about the things I believe in: Mental health advocacy work. I have a charity. I have these things that make me a role model. But, at the same time, none of these things are really representing the badass that I am.”

Lovato feels she’s the pop version of Nicki Minaj and Rihanna. “There’s nobody in the pop industry that says, ‘Don’t f*ck with me,’” notes Lovato. “There’s Rihanna and Nicki Minaj. Those two women, they’re like, ‘I’ll kick your f*cking ass.’ And that’s the thing. I’m totally that, but in pop music.”

She continues, “There’s a side of [me] that people don’t get to see with my past music, but it’s been there. That’s what this album is: I’m no longer serious. I’m done with like the sob stories and the tales. New chapter, new life, new album, new single. This is a completely new Demi.”

Lovato’s “Cool For The Summer” audio was officially released on Wednesday. Watch the video below of Demi Lovato talking more about her new song, “Cool For The Summer,” and her upcoming album.
