Demi Lovato Slammed For Wanting Own Barbie After Zendaya Gets Doll With Dreadlocks
Demi Lovato is getting slammed for tweeting about wanting a Barbie Doll with her likeness shortly after Zendaya was given her own, complete with dreadlocks that reflect her race and background. On Saturday, following Zendaya thanking Barbie for her doll, Lovato tweeted at the company, asking it to make a “curvy doll” for which she would “model.” Suffice to say, it caused an avalanche of criticism on Twitter from those who felt Lovato was trying to steal the spotlight from Zendaya.
As Gossip Cop reported, at Saturday’s Barbie Rock ’N Royals concert at the Hollywood Palladium, Zendaya received with her dreadlocked Barbie doll that mimicked her look at the Oscars. The young actress and singer then thanked the toymaker on Instagram for the “honor and for allowing me to be apart of your diversification and expansion of the definition of beauty.”
Just a few hours after that, Lovato tweeted, “Hey @Barbie, what about a curvy doll or one with true to size measurements? I’ll model!! #raiseyourvoice #besuper” (see below). It only took minutes for detractors to blast her on Twitter. “Hey @Barbie pls dont make a demi lovato doll just bc shes jealous of zendaya’s success this is not her moment,” tweeted one user named @spookyfem. Another person with the Twitter handle @HIFTBABG wrote to Lovato, “I don’t feel like you care about Barbie making curvy dolls, I just think you want the attention tbh.” And someone named @punkthetic asked, “why does demi lovato have to go and make everything about her?????? like sit down and shut up, let zendaya have her moment.”
Directing another comment at Lovato, @CassieFambro tweeted, “This is a big win for women of color. Wait a few days to talk about measurements.” Meanwhile, @Etinni_ offered, “Demi Lovato could chosen ANY TIME to criticize Barbie on not having realistic body sizes. But she only does it in response to Zendaya’s doll.” And @modestmgmts griped on Twitter, “Hey @ddlovato, why don’t you let black people have the spotlight for once?? I’ll tell you to shut up!”
