Laney Brown, 8, Dies of Leukemia on Christmas, Days After “Fabulous” Phone Call From Taylor Swift
An 8-year-old girl whose battle with leukemia inspired thousands of neighbors — as well as Taylor Swift — died on Christmas Day. Delaney “Laney” Ann Brown received a surprise phone call from the singer earlier this month as part of her birthday celebration.
On Facebook, Brown’s mother wrote, “Laney got to fulfill another one of bucket list items… to talk to Taylor Swift!!! Laney was so nervous to talk to her because she is such a ‘famous celebrity.’ I was actually worried that when Taylor FaceTimed her that she would be to scared to talk but Taylor was fabulous!!”
“She really engaged Laney in conversation. Laney lit up and had a huge smile on her face. I can’t thank Taylor enough for taking time out from her family to make Laney’s birthday very memorable,” continued the post. “We will hold that memory in our hearts forever.” The following day, December 21, a “Christmas Caroling for Laney” event was organized through Facebook near the family’s home in West Reading, Pennsylvania, so that the little girl could hear her favorite holiday songs — another dying request. Nearly 10,000 people showed up on the streets in Brown’s neighborhood for an hour of caroling (see below).
Last Wednesday, on Christmas, Brown succumbed to complications from her leukemia. “My heart breaks right now. Our little angel on earth earned her pink glittery angel wings in heaven. She took her last breath at home in her bed at 3:10 surrounded by all her family and friends,” wrote Brown’s mother. “I miss her so much already.” Truly heartbreaking.
