“Deadpool” Breaks Box Office Records To Win Weekend!
Deadpool killed it at the box office this weekend, and broke several records in the process.
The new Marvel comic book adaptation, which stars Ryan Reynolds as the masked, potty-mouthed anti-hero, started achieving the first of several milestones on Thursday night. The film racked up $12.7 million in previews, breaking both R-rated and February preview records set last year by Fifty Shades of Grey. On Friday, Deadpool again outperformed FSOG to amass the highest-grossing February Friday with $47.5 million. Now Deadpool has officially had the biggest February opening of all-time, with a three-day total of $135 million. In other words, this is not another Green Lantern for Reynolds.
As for the rest of the box office, it was a long drop to second place, where former two-time chart-topper Kung Fu Panda 3 ended the weekend with $19.7 million. How To Be Single, with Fifty Shades star Dakota Johnson, debuted in third with $18.8 million. Meanwhile, Ben Stiller’s Zoolander 2 had to settle for a fourth-place opening at $15.7 million.
With ticket sales of $6.6 million, Hail! Caesar nabbed the number five spot. The Revenant took sixth with $6.2 million, while seventh-place finisher Star Wars: The Force Awakens added another $6.1 million to its record-break box office. The Choice came in eighth with a haul of $5.3 million, and Ride Along 2 secured ninth with $4.1 million. Just making it into the Top 10 was The Boy, which had tickets sales of $2.9 million.
