David Duchovny: Doing Russian Beer Commercial Is Not A “Political Statement”
David Duchovny says just because he’s exhibiting pride in his Russian ancestry by appearing in a commercial for Siberian Crown beer, it does not mean that he supports the country’s current politics.
After the ad was released on YouTube last Friday — amid fighting in eastern Ukraine and public accusations surrounding the downing of Malaysian Airlines flight MH17 — the “Californication” actor was slammed for appearing as pro-Russia.
“I am proud of my Russian, Ukrainian, Scottish and Polish heritage as I am proud of my American heritage,” Duchovny explained to TMZ. “But being proud of one’s ancestry is not a political statement on any current government or public policies.”
He noted, “In retrospect, and in light of recent tragic events, I can now see the potential for misunderstanding and hope people will understand.”
