David Alan Grier NOT Tapped As KFC’s First African-American Colonel Sanders, Despite Reports
David Alan Grier is not the newest spokesman for KFC or the first African-American Colonel Sanders, despite a slew of erroneous reports. Gossip Cop can exclusively correct this. We’re told, “There is no new Colonel Sanders.”
According to the Hollywood Reporter, “KFC’s Colonel Sanders has undergone multiple makeovers this past year, and now he will be played by comedian David Alan Grier.” The outlet took a tweet from the comedian at face value that read, “Breaking News: David Alan Grier has been cast as the first African American Colonel Sanders in the new KFC ad campaign. #KFC.”
The Wrap similarly wrongly reported, “David Alan Grier Named KFC’s First Black Colonel Sanders.” And the HuffingtonPost also teased, “You’ll Never Guess Who KFC Just Chose To Be Colonel Sanders.” But Gossip Cop has exclusively learned Grier is not the new Colonel Sanders.
KFC’s Chief Marketing Officer Kevin Hochman tells Gossip Cop, “We are very excited to learn that Mr. Grier is such a big fan of KFC and The Colonel. We’re a big fan of him as well. We hope to continue the conversation with him over a $5 Fill Up.” He added, “There is no new Colonel Sanders.”
In the past few months, KFC has had Colonel Sanders played by Darrell Hammond, Norm Macdonald, and Jim Gaffigan. But Grier, despite the Hollywood Reporter story, will not take “the reigns as the first African-American Colonel Sanders.”
