Dave Mirra Family Statement On Suicide: “Shocked And Saddened”
Dave Mirra’s family is “shocked and saddened” over his suicide.
As Gossip Cop reported, the BMX biker was found dead in Greenville, North Carolina on Friday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. He was 41. Understandably, the news has left Mirra’s friends and celebrity pals stunned.
In a statement released Friday by agent Steve Astephen, it’s said, “Dave‘s wife and family are shocked and saddened by the loss of such a remarkable person whom they loved so deeply. Thank you for your kind thoughts and prayers and for respecting their privacy through this difficult time.”
With his wife Laura, Mirra had two young children. He frequently posted about fatherhood on social media, and had even been active on Instagram in the hours before his death. Now investigators plan to look into whether the X-Games gold medalist had CTE, a brain disease caused by repeated trauma, from injuries sustained over the course of his biking career.
Among those still grappling with Mirra’s death is fellow BMXer Carey Hart, who posted on Instagram Friday, “Waking up to the realization this morning that Dave is gone is absolutely heart breaking. I was telling my wife that most of the best memories from my career have Dave involved one way or another, and it’s always a funny memory. Dave was such a genuine dude. He always had a smile on his face and cracking jokes, unless he was in contest mode. He was the fiercest competitor I have ever met.”
“Unfortunately I haven’t seen Dave much since he retired, but I guess that’s what happens in life. Wish I had known something was wrong and he new he had some to talk to. I understand the battle w/ depression. I tame mine with therapy and family,” Hart went on.
Writing directly to his late friend, Hart concluded, “I’m mad as hell at you for doing this, and my heart absolutely shatters for your daughters and wife. But I will cherish our time together and the many good times we had. Ride in Paradise, Dime Bag. You will be greatly missed.”
As previously noted, Mirra was also known to many for hosting MTV’s “Real World/Road Rules Challenge.” Gossip Cop again offers condolences to his family and friends.
