Dave Mirra Suicide Possibly Caused By CTE From BMX Head Injuries (VIDEO)
Dave Mirra’s BMX biking career and the head injuries he suffered over the year may have played a factor in his apparent suicide, said Greenville, North Carolina Mayor Allen Thomas in a press conference on Friday. It’s believed Mirra may have had CTE, a disease found in people who have suffered repetitive brain trauma. Watch the full press conference in the video below.
As Gossip Cop reported, Mirra, 41, was found dead in his truck in North Carolina on Thursday from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Thomas released a statement shortly after the athlete’s death, expressing the town’s grief over the loss of one of its pillars of the community.
During Friday’s press conference, Thomas elaborated on the details surrounding Mirra’s death, and posed the possible role his profession played. “He had a pretty rugged sports career, and took a lot of injuries,” Thomas said. “You have to give pause and wonder, just as we hear about brain trauma in football and other sports, whether that played a factor.” The mayor added, “I hope we’re able to solve that mystery… We can learn from this.” Thomas concluded, “We’re still processing this, but at the end of the day, his legacy is going to live on tremendously.” Watch the press conference below.
