Daniel Radcliffe: “Slightly Miffed” About Harry Potter Oscar Snub

(Warner Bros.)

Daniel Radcliffe is “slightly miffed” that Harry Potter was shut out of the Academy Awards race.

“I don’t think the Oscars like commercial films, or kids’ films, unless they’re directed by Martin Scorsese,” he told Radio Times, adding, “I was watching Hugo the other day and going, ‘Why is this nominated and we’re not?’”

He explains, “There’s a certain amount of snobbery.”

Radcliffe does stress, however, that it’s not as though the Harry Potter didn’t pay off in every way besides an Academy Award.

“How much of a pat on the back do we really need? We get paid stupid amounts of money,” emphasizes the star.

Still, the Oscars snub is “kind of disheartening,” admits Radcliffe.

While the Harry Potter series earned multiple nominations in technical categories over the past 10 years, it never picked up nods in the major categories – acting, writing or directing.

This year’s final installment (Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2) was not among the Best Picture nominees.

Do you agree with Radcliffe?

Should Potter have gotten Oscar nods?

The Oscars don’t define whether a movie is good or not. He’s being a bit whiny because plenty of children’s movies have been nominated & won, they weren’t directed by Martin Scorsese. The Harry Potter franchise has done well over these past 10 years without getting major awards nods.

Every actor who made a movie is “miffed” because they weren’t nominated for an Academy Award. What a bunch of pathetic pansies. Are they actors or collectors of ego statues? Why don’t they just do their jobs, make their movies and thank their lucky stars they are being paid a gazillion dollars for a 90 pound weakling’s job. They call themselves “artists”; artists create for the sake of their art, not for the sake for a public ego display and looking like fools holding a little gold statuette while sniffling and crying and declaring that God is decreed them to the stage of public love & adoration for their work in some movie & that by the next day noone will remember what it was. They should grow up and try to live in the real world when they are not working in the make believe world of acting.

If Titanic deserved an Oscar EVERY movie deserves an Oscar.

I think his disappointment is completely justified. I doubt this has anything to do with collecting trophies, as suggested above, but rather about being virtually ignored for their feats in cinema. Forget the fact that they’ve had an amazing cast with some of the best actors in the UK, but have they even won anything for original score? The music throughout the series has been epic! And what about set design? I don’t think many people will deny the amazing job they did with costumes and set design; they kept their loyal fan following for a reason, and that’s because the world they had created felt real. I think that’s worth something.

After spending a decade making the films, I totally understand why the cast and crew wanted some recognition from award committees. It doesn’t make them greedy, it just shows how much pride they have in their work and how much they want that work to be recognized. Maybe it would be a different story if all children’s or fantasy films were equally ignored, but if the awards committee is going to recognize the children/fantasy genre, then I think many people will agree that it’s surprising that HP has been included in that recognition.

    Eh.

They were huge movies and will probably remain popular for many generation but…I don’t think the acting from the main actors (Radcliffe, Watson. Grint is a little better) was ever good enough to warrant getting such a prestigious nomination.

  • nope

I have to agree. A successful franchise doesn’t necessarily translate into an oscar worthy performance. The wealth and paycheck will have to be enough for now, Daniel.

  • guest

erm.. i don’t want to sound crude.. but his acting skills aren’t soo good that he deserves an oscar.. and there are way better movies out there, than the HP series… sorry daniel.. you have to grow up and start to learn how to act really good, maybe than you can get an oscar.. in a few decades, after you are an established actor in hollywood.. because right now you aren´t!

  • Jane

Witches and warlocks, werewolves and vampires don’t get Oscar nods even though these movies bring in mega bucks.

  • French Flies

Is this on the heels of the confession that he was drunk in some scenes? Seriously?

  • Danny

The final HP movie was among the best-reviewed films of 2011. It definitely deserved something.

There is nothing worth an Oscar in HP apart from -perhaps- technical stuff, let’s face it. I find these films for kids really boring and there is nothing special about them apart from CGI, etc. Why would they be nominated in other categories then? Besides, there’s loads of snobbery about this franchise and a lot of snobbery and vanity about the Oscars. This ceremony is so overrated and unfortunately still has influence on the audience’s opinion on movies. Titanic just confirms these absurdities: so many Oscars and for what? Shame…

  • Ms_ariz

What are you talking about? He’s not talking about his acting (he’s the most humblest actor there is unlike some American actors), he’s talking about the movie itself. So that whole speech was for nothing.

  • Ms_ariz

Doesn’t anyone here read? He did NOT mention anything about acting (GC did). He was talking about the MOVIE.

  • Guest

From other interviews I’ve read, I don’t believe he was talking about getting an Oscar himself. I love HP but I don’t think that Dan, Emma, or Rupert’s performances were award-worthy. But what about Alan Rickman, Michael Gambon, Maggie Smith, etc? And what about special effects or original score? HP could have won a number of awards without even considering the acting, and I think that’s what Daniel is referring to.

  • hpgirl

The Oscars give out other awards than just for acting. I don’t think that’s what Daniel was talking about, that HE deserved an award, I think he meant the film itself deserved an award. I’ve seen a few interviews with the main cast and they all seem so humble, so I don’t think he was referring to himself…

But, even if he was referring to acting, there were a number of other amazing actors in the film that deserved recognition.

  • Aeryn

The Oscars have stopped listening to what the public finds as a great movie. They pick movies that most people would be bored out of their minds to watch. Gosford Park. It won some years ago so I checked it out. It’s a murder mystery movie. Sounds intriguing in the least, yeah? Well the murder that the whole darn movie is supposed to be about doesn’t occur until some 2 yrs in. It’s like the movie form of Moby Dick…takes forever to say anything. Boring.

I think Harry Potter deserved a nom, like the Lord of the Rings got them. I doubt I’ll see most of the nominated movies…as most do not sound interesting in the least.

  • Rach122597

Omigosh, all I can say is YES. YES YES YES YES YES.
Why didn’t Harry Potter get nominated? How can you beat it, in my opinion?

  • Hollywoody5000

Don’t forget public opinion has nothing to do with the AAs. The Academy acknowledges their peers, for various reasons, sometimes emotion sometimes objective. For example Elizabeth Taylor for Butterfield 8 is commonly considered a “mercy” choice and even she alwasy said so. My point is that the movie’s success is the reward in all categories and I think the all awards are great publicity schemes that generate millions more dollars for the industry. The public is just being “used” so to speak. including the “People’s Choice Awards.”

  • Aeryn

True, but they are going so far off course now that I’m almost to the point where I don’t want to even bother to tune in. I think their declining ratings is a sign, if they don’t change things, then it’s possible the only ones who’ll care about the Academy Awards are the ones who are already there.

  • twk22

awww Daniel, just go have a drink and you’ll feel better about it.

  • Donks

Seriously did you notice. And besides even if he might include himself, he’s talking about the movie as a whole. Like GC mentioned it should get something for categories like acting, writing or directing. Alan Rickman was awesome as Snape. And I liked Emma’s performance as well. The story itself is awesome as per all the book sales it gets. And you should know how hard it is to get people especially kids to read.

  • Valinor

Truth be told, the HP movies do not deserve an Academy Award for directing, acting or whatever else. Strip away “Harry Potter” from the titles and you’ve got eight mediocre films with average actors (few notable exceptions, sadly the Trio isn’t one of them) and very strange plots. The movies simply aren’t that good. I’ll admit that the special effects department must work overtime and should be given something for that, as well as the costume crew, but the rest?
    No way.

  • Cecilia4E

I find it sad that you can’t appreciate the magic that is Harry Potter, even if we’re only talking about the movies. Harry Potter is not just a series for kids. It’s a series that promotes values such as bravery, friendship, fighting for what is right, and being yourself.
The last movie was the best reviewed of 2011. The whole series had some of the most talented actors in the UK : Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith, Kenneth Branagh, Helena Bonham Carter… The musical score was phenomenal, especially John Williams and Alexandre Desplat. Harry Potter is not just about CGI effects, and if you can only see this, then – again – I feel sorry for you. You’re missing out on one of the most magical and extraordinary phenomenon that ever existed in our modern age.

  • Cecilia4E

“Mediocre films”… The 8 Harry Potter movies were some of the best reviewed movies of the past decade, and not just by viewers, but also critics. The last movie was the best reviewed movie of all 2011. Have you been living under a rock?
“Average actors”… Alan Rickman, Maggie Smith, Kenneth Branagh, Emma Thompson, Helena Bonham Carter, Imelda Staunton, Ralph Fiennes… If you don’t appreciate their talent, then you don’t know much about acting, now, do you?
“Very strange plots”… Well obviously you need more magic in your life.

The Harry Potter movies were fabulous! They definitely deserved to be nominated!

  • Adam

I agree. I think he should get an oscar especially for that part in the fifth movie where Mad-Eye made the spider dance and Harry clapped his hands and giggled.
    That actually happened, btw.

No, no, seriously, love Daniel Radcliffe to death (how could I not? He’s a nice humble Jewish boy who’s fiercely for gay rights despite being straight), but I don’t think any of the acting, writing, and directing deserved Oscars. The books are absolutely amazing–not really amazingly well-written or crafted, but still amazing. When I see the movies, I am appalled at how people who’ve never read the books before can follow what is going on the screen.

Snape deserves an Oscar, though. Maggie Smith should get an Oscar per year just for existing.

  • GUEST

What is he talking about though? Just last year, Inception (a commercial film) and Toy Story 3 (a kid’s film) were both nominated for Best Picture…And I’m sorry but Hugo was a great worthwhile movie, and deserves recognition. There was no need to put down other movies in expressing his disappointment, especially one that was exceptionally directed. If he couldn’t recognize that then he’s not in a place to judge.

  • me

i’m not sure how they didn’t get the nod for at least the best original score. i’m pretty sure most people recognizes the harry potter theme as soon as it’s played. the rest of the music was phenomenal~!

  • Wastedinjackson

    Truth.

  • Lee Saenz

    1. Daniel Radcliff sucks. He doesn’t deserve an Oscar.
    2. Scorsese has made plenty of movies that didn’t win Oscars.
    3. Winning an Oscar doesn’t mean jack sh**. As far as I’m concerned, seeing as how Brad Pitt, Edward Norton and Johnny Depp have never won an Oscar, they are worthless awards and aren’t a very good measure of anything.
    4. Daniel Radcliff sucks and no one cares about him crying about not getting an Oscar.
