Daniel Radcliffe says it’s “very strange” that people are focusing on his gay sex scenes in the film Kill Your Darlings, which premiered at the Sundance Film Festival on Friday.

The former child star, who stars as Beat Generation poet Allen Ginsberg, has several scenes in the movie during which he engages in masturbation and gay sex.

“It’s interesting that it’s deemed shocking,” he told MTV News, before pointing out, “For me, there’s something very strange about that because we see straight sex scenes all the time. We’ve seen gay sex scenes before. And I don’t know why a gay sex scene should be any more shocking than a straight sex scene. Or both of them are equally un-shocking.”

Radcliffe, whose character was nude and mutilated horses in the Broadway play “Equus,” further noted that it “weirded” him out most that people are “asking me all these questions about the gay sex scenes. I was like, ‘You know I did ‘Equis?’”

“Some people are asking me questions like this is a more shocking subject, which is so strange,” he added.

You have to be kidding me! It is shocking! And disgusting!

Maybe it’s because you are straight, so straight sex seems what to expect from you?

  • http://www.facebook.com/#!/profile.php?id=100000464734097&v=info Solas

But you are right; both are equally shocking.

    Fail. Your ignorance is disgusting.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/David-Robertson/100001585705679 David Robertson

Gay actors play straight all the time. NPH plays straight and people love him. A straight actor plays gay, and he loses popularity or he’s seen as gay. All of it is representative of a society where homosexuality is demonized.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/David-Robertson/100001585705679 David Robertson

Daniel is right. It’s a movie. It’s kissing, and it’s simulated sex. Men have sex with other men. It isn’t a big deal. It’s a movie. Until people actually stop caring about homosexuality, instead of pretending as if they don’t care but really not digging it, then we’re going to continue to see these manufactured stories.

Well,I have no wish to see gay people have sex, my opinion is against that. I have right to have my own opinion, I should not be afraid even if its different then yours. And I should not be bullied to accept something that I don’t see as natural. I don’t carry hate, but I simply disagree. And if I am ignorant for that, so be it. But I rather sacrifice nudity in movies per se, than watch gay people to have sex. And I should not be forced to do that. I believe ignorance is also the fact that nobody asking me about my opinion, neither to those who disagree with Daniel. Ignorance is a broad word,,and can be use in every angle, believe me.

You’re entitled to your opinion, and I’m entitled to call you a bigot. Your opinion is clear, you’re anti-gay, and that is bigotry. BTW, homosexuality is rampant in nature and anti-gay attitudes are rare to nonexistent.

  • Martina

I disagree, in today’s world, once you speak up against homosexuality, your career is officially over. It HAS to be accepted, and you HAVE to agree. Everyone with their issue over that is homophobic. What is incorrect term, as I am not afraid , neither have any phobia about homosexuality.
Every actor who plays gay, is honoured, movie always get the award. And I could go on and on and on…..
I say this, – don’t push people ( not you literally ) to believe in setting, to like something, etc. Let them be free, with their opinions, their vision of their life.
Especially if you allow freedom for one group, using propaganda of human rights that does not interest you for those who are in the group no.2.

If so, that is sad. But I am not sure it is so; Daniel Day Lewis, Robert Pattinson, and I am sure quite a few more have played gay men, but they are straight, and I don’t think they are seen as gay or have lost popularity. Still, there is a sense, for many people, of something being not normal or right when people see gay men or gay characters. Intelligent people will at the very least realize that actors act, and hopefully will realize a bit more.

They’re both British, though, and sadly, the US is not anywhere near the tolerance level of England. Robert Pattinson has tons of gay rumors. It’s especially true with guys that are younger and seen as attractive. AKA Heath Ledger, bless his heart and RIP to him, was 100% straight yet was incessantly called gay because of Brokeback. Jake G,’s career, it has to be said, is clearly not what it once was. Gay rumors and who he’s dating are linked to him more than interest in movies.

It’s sad but it’s real. The only ones who can get away with it, for lack of a better way to put it, are the actors who are avowed heterosexuals that no-one can classify as gay. And in those cases they are considered “bold” because it’s somehow so daring for a straight actor to play gay.

You’re right, there is a sense of “this is not how things are supposed to be” in the minds of people when they hear the word gay, let alone see anything gay-oriented. That’s why movies like this are important. The more the boundaries are pushed, the less rigid these boundaries will be.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/David-Robertson/100001585705679 David Robertson

Actually, that’s part of the problem. It shouldn’t be seen as courageous to play gay, because it isn’t. It’s simply another role. There is nothing daring in it. As for your opinions, your opinions are harming the lives of millions of innocent people who are doing absolutely nothing wrong and therefore, no, I will not let anti-gay opinions slide. It’s wrong just as racism, sexism, anti-semetic views are. You’re entitled to your views but that doesn’t equal freedom from criticism.

Homophobia=Irrational fear of, aversion towards, and/or discrimination against homosexuality/homosexuals.

Thank you so much for your comments and insights. I had no idea that Heath Ledger, may he rest in peace, was called gay, and I had no idea that Jake G’s career was affected. It is so silly. And yet, actors who are really gay and clear about it, like Ian McKellan, are (at least to my ignorant eyes–I am not so experienced with films and the acting world) respected and recognized.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/David-Robertson/100001585705679 David Robertson

You’re welcome, Solas! Yes, Heath was rumored to be gay although he was married with a child. Jake was an A-lister and his career has fallen very flat the last years. Is it because of Brokeback? It’s something that, you have to consider because he was a young upcoming budding star, and then Brokeback came. Now his career is overshadowed.

Ian McKellan is older and British. He’s also established. If you’re not established as a grade-A actor, coming out as gay or taking a gay role is usually shunned, by Middle America at least. A lot of film executives won’t touch you. It’s *beginning* to change, so hopefully this is a trend that doesn’t last for too much longer.

  • miley

Well said. Martina and narrow minded people like her are the people that are sending this world straight to hell.

  • holly

Amen! So nice to see intelligence on this site! Martina take notes and hush you got owned and are just silly.

  • MissZee

so don’t see gay people have sex. problem solved. no need to go “disgusting!”..we get it…you hate gays

  • Right on

right on daniel. shocking is right that people are asking more questions on a gay sex scene than a guy doing whatever the hell he did to that horse. i’ve never seen the play but i know enough to know i don’t want to. yeesh.

  • greg2318

ok .. what was the title of the film ? Harry Pooter?

  • Good things for All

Homosexuality exists in nature, but, is it rampant? What do you mean by that? And what do you mean by the fact that there aren’t any anti-gay attitudes in nature? This is a genuine question, I don’t understand and I want to understand. I always thought everything had it’s opposite in nature and they combined for production. When when you use the argument that nature is rampantly gay – as in biology, ecology, right? I don’t understand the role in the light of production and evolutionary process.

  • vashti

its like almost everytime i see a movie it always have homosexuality in it its like they trying to make people accept it and think its ok. well i have my rights and opinions just like everyone else and to me its not right its not fair.

  • EndlessRepetition

Let’s be clear about why individuals who speak against gay people are called anti-gay. They are seen as excusing discrimination and mistreatment of gay people while at the same time attacking their dignity, status, integrity, and moral standing. Now, I’m willing to keep an open mind. Can you tell me your intentions and vision here?
