Daniel Radcliffe: I Filmed Harry Potter While Drunk, Thought About Quitting Franchise

Truth rating: 10

Daniel Radcliffe, who admitted last summer that he’s spent years secretly struggling with an alcohol addiction, has now revealed there were times he filmed the Harry Potter franchise while drunk.

“I can point to many scenes where I’m just gone. Dead behind the eyes,” he says in an interview in the new issue of Heat.

Radcliffe clarified that while he never drank on set, he did go “into work still drunk.”

The actor, who’s been busy promoting his new movie The Woman In Black, further told ShortList that drinking turned him into a “rude bore” who often drank until he blacked out.

“For a long time people were saying to me, ‘We think you have a problem,’ but in the end I had to come to the realization myself,” Radcliffe explains.

The movie star has been sober since August 2010.

He also reveals that he contemplated quitting Harry Potter after filming the series’ third movie.

“It was only for a second, but I thought, ‘If I do the fourth, I’ll have to do them all,’ and that seemed quite daunting,” he tells ShortList.

He adds, “If I was going to leave, that would have been the perfect time because it would have given whoever came in to play Harry enough films to establish himself properly. It wouldn’t have totally dumped him in the sh-t.”

So what stopped him from following through?

Radcliffe explains, “But then I started thinking, ‘What other good parts are there for 15-year-olds? None.’”

What do you think of Radcliffe’s comments?

Cant say im surprised. Its funny what comes out after its all said and done. Im sure Rob Pattinson could make the same statement so I wont be one to judge.

  • Simon

Strange to think of another actor playing Harry Potter. I wonder who would of taken the lead role if Daniel Radcliffe had quit?

  • Robsessed1986

I’m just happy that Daniel quit drinking and I hope he can stay sober. I have no doubt he can do it, if he wants to. Mean while, I am looking foward to seeing his new movie, “The Woman in Black”, looks like a very good movie!! Best of luck to you in your future endeavors Daniel !!

  • Linda

Well I’m surprised. Never thought of Daniel as the drinker type.

  • http://twitter.com/Nathiest Nathiest

He has already stated this before.

  • femroc

Wonder what would motivate him to talk about his problem in public – is that part of the 12 step program??? Or is he just trying to appear to be more grown up??
He doesn’t have to work another day in his life with all the money he has now.

  • Mama2Jude1112

I couldn’t have said it better.

  • Danny

I feel like watching all the Harry Potter movies to see if I can tell when he’s drunk. Which probably won’t happen because he’s a good actor, but it sounds like fun.

  • stark

good thing he realized it right away coz a lot of aspiring actors would love to take his place

OK, films finished, time to make some money in the press talking about your private life. Gosh, I don’t know about Robert Pattinson, but I hope he will never come up with ‘news’ like this in magazines. Yet, I must admit, his erratic and moronic behaviour at some stupid awards events might have suggested he was on sth. Frankly, I wouldn’t be surprised: how on earth is one supposed to survive some of those, paps chasing you day after miserable day and hoards of pseudofans who need medication? Still, Pattinson seems to me like the guy who knows better than become a drug addict or an alcoholic (for the sake of his career).

It’s better to be honest than to lie about it. If he is putting it out there himself then it can’t turn into one of those things that can come back to haunt him later when someone trying to make money sells the story about him. Plus, when you’re honest and open about your problem then it does help with your sobriety.

It is extremely ignorant to say that anyone seems like someone who “knows better” than to become an addict or alcoholic. No one intentionally sets out to become addictive to something and it can happen to anyone (even Robert Pattinson – he does drink already and has admitted to taking Xanax to calm him down for auditions/meetings before so he’s not really got a straight edge mentality or anything, and he’s at that level of fame that is probably pretty stressful, it’d be easy for drinking to become a problem).

Dan and the other Harry Potter leads have been dealing with that level of fame for a lot longer than the Twilight stars have and the worst part is, they’ve been dealing with it since they were kids. Dan had a problem and he’s owning up to it – it baffles me that Twilight fans will praise Rob and Kristen for their honesty and not being fake and yet when other stars are honest, they’re accused of just trying to make news (and Dan probably didn’t even bring up the subject in the interview, the interviewer would have asked him about it).

  • Connie

You have completely missed my point. I DID write that Pattinson seems to be taking sth sometimes, and it’s true he never said he doesn’t drink ( we all do). Also, “No one intentionally sets out to become addictive”? Who’s being ignorant here? It’s common knowledge that alcohol is addictive and if one drinks too much and too often and they don’t see it as a problem, then they definitely HAVE a problem. One has the brain to use it. It’s all about your character and your free will, one just needs to know when to stop. It’s good for Radcliffe that he did stop before he ruined his life. I’ve never said that Rob and Kristen are always honest (I don’t believe one can be in their line of work and in general), especially that it’s hard to figure out when Pattinson is telling the truth and when he is just joking. And yes, private life details are good for headlines.

um theres a thing called a functioning alcoholic and don’t forget the drinking age in England is 16 not 21 like it is in the USA. staying sober in the film industry is harer than it is in regular life due to the open bar mentality at award shows and otther social functions ask Joanne Woodward she was married to a reformed drunk Paul got sober in 1970 and after that only drank at special family occasions like their wedding anniversary daughters weddings grandchildrens christennings communions and confirmations though he probably didn’t at their 50th anniversary in January of 08 because of his Lung Cancer which eventually took his life on 26th september 08 the day before their middle daughter Melissa’s birthday which they had celebrated 2 weeks earlier because they knew the end was coming

  • Ee

the drinking age in England is 18

Might be a poorly-designed publicity stunt, like Enrique Iglesias claiming to have the smallest weiner under the sun, though he mostly comes across as a down to earth fellow.

  • Anonymous

He will do well if he keeps his head on straight.

  • Valinor

“Dead behind the eyes” – so he started drinking at age eleven? Oh dear, dear.

  • SavedbyGrace

Wait…what? Seriously? “(we all do)” No, not everyone does. And alcohol isn’t necessarily addictive. Many people can manage to drink on a regular or semi-regular basis & occasionally over-indulge & limit themselves just fine. It’s addictive to those who are alcoholics, whether they know it yet or not. Whether or not you become alcoholic or not, can get & stay clean or sober has absolutely nothing to do with strength of character or willpower. There are plenty of people out there wanting to stop or limit themselves & simply can’t on their own or even with the support of others, usually because they are unable to be honest with themselves or others. How do I know? I’ve been clean & sober for over 17 yrs & have met hundreds of men, women & teenagers who have tried everything they could think of to control their addictions & lost everything & everyone they loved in the process because will power alone is not enough. It takes support, total honesty & turning your will & life over to a Higher Power, as we understand Him. And with that I have seen hundreds more enjoy life in recovery.
You have no idea what Danielle Radcliffe lost before he hit his bottom. We often ruin our lives & laying waste & a path of destruction around us before we turn it around. But we can recover & we can rebuild our lives, quite often in a healthier environment than it was before.

You have to be 18 to purchase an alcoholic drink in a pub or bar in the UK but you can consume an alcoholic drink that someone else has bought for you at the age of 16.

  • tate

Um, “we all do” – actually, I don’t. I can have a better time without it. Two of my best friends don’t drink and a lot of other people I know don’t drink either. So no, not everyone drinks (although, I have no problem with people that do).

When I said that no one sets out to become an addict, I mean that they don’t drink and make a conscious decision for it to become a problem; they don’t wake up one day and say, “Oh hey, I think I’ll start having a drinking problem now!” (and not everyone that drinks becomes an alcoholic, it’s not something that you’re guaranteed to get addicted to if you drink it enough).

It’s something that happens gradually and they often don’t even realise they have a problem until it’s too late and they’re hooked or it’s become their go-to coping mechanism and even then, once they can admit to themselves that they have a problem, staying sober isn’t easy.

It can happen to anyone, even Robert Pattinson – not that I think it will, I just think it’s incredibly ignorant of you to actually think you can look at someone, especially a celebrity you don’t know personally, and say that someone won’t become an addict cause they “know better” – that implies that it’s something that can be controlled (the only way to ensure you won’t become an alcoholic or addicted to something, is to not take it at all).

“And yes, private life details are good for headlines.” – Yeah, they are, but interviews are part of an actors career and when they’re asked a question, they have the choice to lie, be honest or dodge the question which would just result in the press hounding them for the answer. With something like an addiction, staying honest about the problem tends to be better for staying sober (and this isn’t Dan creating “news” because the “news” of his drinking problem has already been out for ages and so interviewers will ask him about it).

I can’t imagine the pressure on Daniel, Robert, all those who are constantly under scrutiny. I understand that it is their choice to live this life, but it has to be stressful. My hat’s off to Daniel for taking control of his problem and not letting it ruin him. Not all can say the same thing.

  • http://twitter.com/Aim4theNeck Aimie

Well done to him for coming forward and being honest with his fans. I think he should be proud at how far he has come since those dark days and for accepting his problem. He is a fantastic actor. I can’t wait to see him in his new one “The Woman in Black.”

  • http://twitter.com/Aim4theNeck Aimie

He doesn’t need to make money. He is loaded and has more work coming out like “The Woman in Black”. He was just being honest and proud at overcoming that obstacle in his life.

I wish Daniel Rafcliffe well in his fight against alcoholism. Hope he does something regarding his drinking problem, be it counseling, rehab, other treatment. Being a person who is an alcoholic is someone with a medical problem and not a weakness. Kudos to Radcliffe for his realization
