As Gossip Cop previously reported, this is D’Angelo’s first time as the musical guest on “SNL.” He’s now promoting his new record “Black Messiah,” his first album in almost a decade and a half.
Following the massive success of his second studio album “Voodoo,” D’Angelo reportedly become uncomfortable with his newfound sex symbol status and retreated to a more reclusive life back home in Richmond, Virginia. During those years of relative solitude, however, D’Angelo became an alcoholic. He was also arrested for a DUI and marijuana possession, leading eventually to a stint in rehab.
Following that, even though he still wasn’t releasing his own music, D’Angelo contributed to, among others, Common’s “Finding Forever,” Q-Tip’s “The Renaissance,” and Snoop Dogg’s “Tha Blue Carpet Treatment.”
Now he’s out with “Black Messiah,” with debuted at number five of Billboard’s Top 200 chart. D’Angelo has explained that he doesn’t want the album’s title to be misunderstood. He’s noted that he’s not calling himself a “Black Messiah,” but rather everyone should aspire to be a Black Messiah. He added that it’s about “rising up” in places like Egypt, Occupy Wall Street, and Ferguson and any place where a “community has had enough and decides to make change happen.”
