MAG: Dancing with the Stars is “Fixed”

Truth rating: 0

(ABC)

“Dancing with the Stars” may be “rigged,” reports Star.

The mag notes that Shawn Johnson and Derek Hough received high scores from the judges all season long, whereas the season’s eventual winners, Melissa Rycroft and Tony Dovolani, only got “mixed reviews.”

The reason for the incongruity is simple, according to a supposed show insider, who alleges in the tab that “the whole thing was fixed!”

Star claims, “Instead of talent giving the victors the edge, it was their manager — who happens to be one of the show’s producers!”

The tabloid explains that “Dancing with the Stars” senior producer Deena Katz is Dovolani’s manager, and has also been “overseeing Melissa’s career for months.”

The purported “insider” alleges that Katz “helped picked the cast and winner,” noting, “Melissa is not as good as many of the other dancers on the show, but Deena wouldn’t let her get voted off.”

Well, that’s all well and good, except for one thing: Katz does NOT manage Rycroft or Dovolani.

Oops.

A source close to the former “Bachelorette” star tells Gossip Cop that while Rycroft sometimes refers to Katz as her manager because Katz has taken an interest in her career, ”Melissa doesn’t have a manager and never has.”

And Dovolani’s rep similarly tells us, “Tony does not have a manager.”

Also, Dovolani has been on the show every season since the second — and this was his first ever win.

Why would Katz suddenly choose to fix the show to make Dovolani win after all of this time?

Lastly, Gossip Cop will point out that fan voting contributes to half of the results determining the winner regardless of score.

Clearly, Star’s insider’s allegations simply do not add up.

Yet another inaccurate tale from the tabloid gets eliminated.

Maybe not that way but the show was totally rigged just go watch videos on YT and u’ll see!

Melissa Rycroft wrote a book and in it she states that Deena Katz is her manager!! But no surprise she and the show are lying about that now. DWTS was totally rigged and fixed this season for Melissa and Tony-the show wanted that (fake) fairy tale storyline of giving it to the couple who never won before. Everyone knows that !!

  • MyName

Incorrect. Melissa herself describes Deena as her manager.

“I always thought I was really social and apparently I’m kind of anti-social,” Melisa tells us. “My wonderful friend and manager, Deena Katz, set me up with two girls she thought I would get along with, one was Anne, one’s Alyssa. And Alyssa, great!”

    Your source kind of sucks…

i’m wondering how all the conspiracy theorist commenters think the show could be rigged? melissa and tony had the highest scores the last few weeks of the show, including the finale night. tony has been a fan favorite for years. the winners have a combination of fan votes and judges’ scores…how exactly were the fan votes rigged? melissa was the sentimental favorite to win since she had never won before, nor had tony. rarely has the “best” dancer on the show won the mirror ball, the dancer with the skills that impress the judges plus the journey that makes the fans fall in love wins every season. people please get a life. no one rigged the show. melissa and tony won because their scores were excellent and the fans loved them. move on.

…Not sure i’m seeing the difference between not being an ‘official’ manager versus “taking an interest in her career”. Pretty much the same thing. If she takes interest in one couple over others, even if she is not officially managing them, it’s still right up there with ‘conflict of interest’.

Eh, five dollars says he threatened to quit the show if he didn’t win All Stars.

He is their go-to pro for the delicate ladies of a certain age who need the coddling that he is apparently so good at giving. I know more than a few celebs made getting Tony a condition of their appearing on the show- I know that Jane Seymour and Susan Lucci were two. There’s another I think was the same case but can’t be sure so won’t include.
He’s a patient, supportive instructor who seems to know how to handle divas.

SO… I can totally see them setting up an All Stars season to keep him.
Like Project Runway All Stars was contrived to give Mondo his win.

The dancing with the stars is LAME. The hype about this show I will NEVER get

  • Suspicious

Looks like dwts just keeps feeding their viewers lie after lie. Melissa herself has said her agent is Deena Katz— and i would call this a HUGE CONFLICT OF INTEREST. Also judges kept giving Melissa perfect scores (as instructed by the the producers) and declaring her the marathon winner while giving better dancers lower scores. The two Olympians had huge fan bases plus both were GREAT dancers—yet Melissa somehow mysteriously won over them. I don’t think so.
Was the show riggedf for Melissa and Tony—sure looks like it.

  • Kar

The judges were giving them all 10′s when they didn’t deserve it. The show was fixed for the the judges favs, there was an agenda there and everyone saw it. Emmett could dance around Cheryl and get 10′s. Someone else do that and they’d get a 5. Melissa could stand and do nothing but get a 10.

I liked Melissa; I do think the fan vote counts for too much if it keeps duds like Kirstie and Bristol around.

  • pennylover

This is why the ratings for DWTS are going down and now there’s talk that it will only air once a year. The fans aren’t stupid. This show is fixed. They know who’s going to win before the competition even begins. You can vote all you want, but the producers decide who gets the trophy. Why do you think some of the pros are leaving.

  • mea

Yes, fixed. I’ve been watching this show since season 1, being Kelly/Alex my first favorite couple n voting 4 them. 4 the first time, I’m really disappointed in ABC. Won’t b watching live anymore, no more voting, but will DVR DWTS where i can just fast forward the sponsored commercials.
U know Shawn/Derek should have won. Not only what people are saying about Denna Katz but Shawn/Derek would have had more votes if ABC’s voting site did not crash. Site crashed about 9:30p Monday n we tried all the way to the allotted time next day…still ABC’s site was down….supposedly a big show like this and no tech support to fix it! The Fab-5 also mentioned to their fans to vote for them n they have thousands of fans n u know they wouldn’t let them down. So don’t tell me Melissa/Tony won. The judges scores were close enough that that didn’t matter. ..remember, Kelly/Val never got a 10 n they were in the finals b/c of the strong public voting.

On Ryan Seacrest’s website there’s an interview with Melissa Rycroft where she directly refers to Deena Katz as “my wonderful friend and manager, Deena Katz.” According to some of the other commenters here, she also defines Katz as her manager in her book.
So with all respect, if you want to point the naughty finger for false allegations of a conflict of interest or a fix, try pointing it at Melissa Rycroft, not the people who believed her.

  • http://www.facebook.com/rebecca.davis.1460 Rebecca Davis

Yes she did state Deena as her manager not only in her book, but also Deena was seen and referred to as her manager on Melissa’s reality show several times, as well as multiple other places…I am totally suprised Melissa was allowed back on the show after what she wrote herself in her book during her time on season 8 with her rib injury…The allegations were horrific against a Dr and that whole senario alone…unbelievable… Yet a miraculous recovery as she saw this time too….

  • Malia

OF course it was rigged! Shawn and Derek deserved to win and should have won because of two reasons. 1) Shawn was the best dancer and she and Derek were the better couple. 2) Shawn and Derek alone have a massive fan base not even including the Fierce 5, Julianne etc.. The show is a sham and if ABC thought that the fans will buy into this ridiculous manipulating with the judge’s scores, pre-dance packages of showing Melissa and Tony never winning before, they are fooling themselves. Even Kelly and Val’s fans are shocked M&T won where they know they couldn’t compete with S&D fan’s base but no way where M&T’s fans bigger than theirs. So DWTS viewership will even be lower than where it was. Good going ABC!

Thanks for the source… She called her “manager” not a friend with an “interest.

  • http://www.facebook.com/people/Lee-Putnam/100001566371939 Lee Putnam

No kidding… Derek’s’ and Shawn’s youtube views are about higher by 4 times.

  • MyName

Oh, so so now that you were called out, GossipCop, you’re randomly adding in the part about Melissa sometimes calling her her manager? And we’re supposed to believe that Melissa was just calling her that for the heck of it? And even if so, how would that be any better? She’s still deeply engrossed in Melissa’s career.

Also, what kind of shoddy publication is this? You update the story with that little tidbit as if you said it all along, but you make no mention that it’s been updated. Why is that? Wanting to pretend you were “on the ball” all along? Wanting to make what you’re saying seem more credible? You’re only making it worse, and looking more and more ridicukous by the minute.

Also why did you feel the need to add in the defensive screed about Tony? You sound like a fan, not a legitimate news deliverer. What’s the name of the writer of this piece, by the way? And is it typical to use a “source” to “clear things up”? Why would this person feel shame about going on the record, if they knew they were telling the truth? The answer is clearly because they’re not.

This looks like it was written by a fan. And all you’re doing is digging the hole deeper, because now you’re making Melissa look like a blatant liar, in addition to everything else.

No legitimate publication would ever publish something like this with so many holes in it, and the biggest shame of it all, is that you’re trying to act like definitive truth source. When you’re actually proving yourself to be the exact opposite!

  • Karina

Sorry, but the only reason Melissa & Tony had high scores because of the judge’s over scoring them and under scoring Shawn & Derek (except for QS b/c of the breaking of rules). Melissa made way more mistakes but still received high scores, whereas Ms. Perfection Shawn kept getting lower scores – it was truly ridiculous. But yet it should be a compliment because seems the judges were scoring her like a PRO. And btw, the scores were 1.5 points from each other so that’s a pretty moot point.

Yeah, Melissa & Tony were the sentimental couple, more like the PITY/SYMPATHY couple because they haven’t won before. This is ALL STARS – the best of the best, and you can’t be called that if you’ve never won before. And you shouldn’t just be handing out awards to people because you feel sorry for them but obviously this is what happened because the BEST dancer/couple did not win. SHAWN & DEREK are the Champ of Champs despite not winning the trophy!

  • MR SIR

    Well, DUH!

  • http://www.facebook.com/judith.hosking.9 Judith Hosking

Get over it..Shawn and Derek did’ny win because they blatantlyt defied all rules and her dances were all gymnastics not dancing. Melissa and Tony obeyed the rules, danced their hearts out and did a wonderful job! I voted for them every tome! Stop being a sore loser, even Shawn and Derek were happy for them

  • Dwtsfan12

Shawn is amazing but her dances were often more gymnastics than dance. Melissa has amazing dance technique and musicality which is probably what the judges saw and appreciated. And Tony’s choreography this season was his best ever. And by the way, half of the All Stars who started the season did not win in their original season. The All Star season was intended to be a combination of past winners, fan favorites like Bristol and Kirstie and Gilles and Melissa, stars who were voted off in surprise eliminations like Sabrina, and others who were among the most popular contestants on the show.

Also, scores that are 1.5 apart are not moot (that word doesn’t even apply to this situation, look it up) but that is a substantial difference in the semi finals and finals when there are perfect scores. I love Shawn and Derek but they made a choice when breaking the rules blatantly. The judges don’t like it and the fans don’t like it, it comes off as arrogant. Fans didn’t feel sorry for Melissa, fans vote for the dancers who dance great and with who, they connect. The show is primarily entertainment, not a professional ballroom competition. American Idol and all the other call in shows are the same format. If you don’t like the results, blame the voters.

  • Karina

You are truly blind if you think or feel Shawn only did gymnastics. I can tell you how many times she did gymnastics in her 13 dances and it wasn’t even close to the amount of “lifts” Melissa did. You and many people are simply obsessed with the fact that Shawn is great at gymnastics and fail to see that she is a GREAT dancer and was the best out there. And I know because I am a dancer/gymnast and so are many of my friends and colleagues who feel the same which most great dancers do gymnastics like Derek and Mark who are the best pros. People wished their so called “star” can do gymnastics because if they can, they will be putting it in their routines. You have to get over the fact that Shawn CAN DO IT ALL!! Even Bruno asked what else can’t she do and commented on TV that she can do anything unlike the others. Yeah, Tony’s choreography may have been HIS best but Derek always has the best choreography. Tony’s best can only equal Derek’s day to day and everyone knows that including insiders and other dancer/choreographers in the BIZ! That’s why he has emmy nominations (Tony doesn’t) and he’s been praised numerous times by the industry.

Melissa had lines because she’s thin which Len mostly appreciated. She has 22 years dance experience, what else would you expect. But for someone who’s had that much experience, she should be much better than that. Shawn had 13 weeks and look what she can do. Even pros are saying she dances like a pro already. Give her 1 year, she’ll crush Melissa. And technique wise, you can’t touch Shawn as you seem to not also hear after each of her performances, the word PERFECTION! And this is ALL STARS! Regular dances don’t cut it – yes sure with the judges b/c that’s what they have to do. But there was so many backlash as why call it all stars if you’re not gonna push the boundaries. And if you actually think that Melissa and Tony have more fan base than Shawn and Derek, you’re delusional. Even Kelly and Val fans are shocked they won and they don’t even feel M&T have more fans than them, let alone Shawn and Derek.

Melissa and Tony’s agent/mgr are also affiliated with the show and is a conflict of interest.

Voters did vote and they couldn’t get through. And if the results were so great, why is everyone questioning it including news and media. Even the ballroom was shocked but sure happy for them because THEY NEVER WON. Everyone knew who the best were like Derek said, it’s the videos that will be viewed, not scores. Who got the most ovation and loudest applaud? Who did the best Instant Dance which is very difficult and will separate the good and the better/best? In which case, Shawn crushed it along with her other performances. And even now, M&T may have won but who’s videos are the most popular. Yes, thank you! Enough Said!

  • Malia

This was ALL STAR season, you have to step outside of the box, push boundaries and create memorable, epic, amazing dances and that’s what Shawn and Derek did. They set the bar very high and even Tony had to “push” in order to get to their level . “Were all gymnastics” is a delusional statement because you and everyone who’s stated that’s what all Shawn did is ludicrous and you know it so you need to stop lying to yourself. When people say those things, it shows how much they know about dance and competition and how desperate they are to try to prove something false. Funny, no one talks about the ridiculous lifts Melissa does and I didn’t even mention them until now. Yes Melissa and Tony did a wonderful job but this was about the “best of the best” and they clearly were NOT. Every one danced their hearts out, not just Melissa and Tony. I know many Kelly and Val supporters and even they feel the same way so it’s not even just Shawn and Derek fans. So you get over the fact that this was rigged and we all know who should have won. Champ of Champs go to Shawn and Derek! Winners and MB trophy are material stuff. Their extraordinary performances will outlive the trophy and it’s already evident in YouTube!
