VIDEO: Drag Queen Dakota Suarez Wins Over Judges On American Idol
Dakota Suarez surprised on “America Idol” on Thursday with both his voice and his profession. The 18-year-old revealed he works as a drag queen named Bianca Jade. Watch below!
Suarez said he’s from a “small town” in Texas with “very small-minded” people. “There’s none of my kind,” he lamented. After his audition, Harry Connick Jr. admitted he’d love to see his “kind” in the FOX music competition, though he wasn’t blown away by the contestant’s voice. Jennifer Lopez and Keith Urban, however, were impressed enough to send Suarez to Hollywood.
Connick explained, “Dakota, nothing would give me greater pleasure than to see a drag queen on ‘Idol’ coming in like one day you’re a guy, one day you’re in drag. That’s really exciting to me.” “But,” he continued, “the voice is an integral part in this competition, and I think you have a nice voice but’s not an incredible voice.” Lopez, who Suarez was “so excited to meet” as a fan since her Selena days, told the aspiring star that the performance was “pretty, baby,” and went on to show more support than Connick. “I really like you, and I really think you are a good performer. And your voice is really good.” With Connick and Lopez divided, it came down to Urban, who said, “It’s like, so do you have the thing or don’t you have a thing? I think you should go to Hollywood,” said the judge.
Cue Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way.” Literally, the show started playing the anthem as soon as Suarez received the good news. Happy and confident, he vowed to prove Connick wrong, and told the camera afterward, “You better watch out, because Dakota’s in the house!” Check out the full audition below, and tell us what you think!
