Clay Aiken lost his bid to become a congressman in North Carolina on Tuesday. As Gossip Cop reported, the former “American Idol” star ran for the House of Representatives on the Democratic ticket in the state’s second congressional district.

His opponent, Republican Renee Ellmers, won with nearly 59 percent of the vote, topping Aiken’s 41 percent. That was with 97 percent of precincts reporting.

Aiken’s quest to hold the Washington, D.C. office was, at times, a strange one. As Gossip Cop reported, the eighth-generation Carolinian was first reported to be interested in running back in January. He then announced his intentions in a video in February, explaining why he was seeking to unseat incumbent Ellmers.

Gossip Cop previously reported that days after the Democratic primary in May, Aiken’s primary opponent Keith Crisco suddenly died after a fall at home. Aiken’s win over Crisco, by a margin of just a few hundred votes, was finalized the next day, but the singer temporarily suspended his campaign out of respect for Crisco and his grieving family. He has spent the months since, however, courting votes.

Sadly, this is not the first time Aiken has finished in second place. He was runner-up to Ruben Studdard during season 2 of “American Idol” in 2003. And, as Gossip Cop reported at the time, he lost to Arsenio Hall on the fifth season of “Celebrity Apprentice” in 2012.

Aiken had Studdard and “American Idol” season 3 winner Fantasia help campaign for him. He has spent much of the years since “Idol” working as an activist, in addition to some showbiz pursuits. In announcing his intention to run, Aiken had said, “I’m not a politician. I don’t ever want to be one.” He insisted he just wanted to help the Capitol “represent all the people.”

Aiken’s Election Day first hit a snag early on. After voting at his local polling place Tuesday morning, his campaign bus broke down as it attempted to leave for its next stop. Police officers and a tow truck were ultimately required to get it off the road.

Gossip Cop will update with a statement from Aiken when available. It’s not clear if he has officially conceded yet. What do you think of the star losing?
