Clark Beckham “Boyfriend” American Idol Video: Singer Criticized For Changing Justin Bieber’s Hit Song — WATCH
Clark Beckham stumbled with a reworked version of Justin Bieber’s “Boyfriend” on Wednesday’s “American Idol.” Watch below, and tell us what you think.
The season 14 frontrunner found out he was safe from elimination and in the Top 5 earlier in the episode, before performing The Beatles’ “Yesterday,” for the night’s “Arena Anthem” theme. Harry Connick Jr. called the rendition “terrific,” with Keith Urban and Jennifer Lopez both deeming it “beautiful.”
But it was with “Boyfriend” that Beckham got some of the worst criticism he’s received in weeks. Using an acoustic guitar, Beckham changed up the hit song’s melody at parts, leaving the panel disappointed. Connick even suggested that the contestant had done himself a “disservice” by previously “setting the bar really high.” He went on to tell Beckham, “That to me was not the right song to do what you were doing with it on.”
Keith Urban agreed, and said he missed the kind of “dangerous” vibe that Bieber’s original had. And Lopez also told Beckham that she’s “not sure it was the best thing for you to show [a stadium anthem] performance.” She explained, “It’s about creating moments up there… I don’t know that the was the right thing.”
For his part, Beckham defended his musical choices, and said he’s not only done “Boyfriend” this way before, but believes this version of it is right in his wheelhouse. Check out both performances below, and tell us if you agree with the judges.
