Christina Applegate Blasts Paparazzi: “Taking Pics of Kids Is Sick!”

Truth rating: 10

Christina Applegate had some harsh words for the paparazzi — and the celebrities who encourage them — on Twitter early Friday morning.

The “Up All Night” star revealed an outing with her year-and-a-half-old daughter Sadie turned downright scary after they found themselves surrounded by photographers.

Applegate began, “I want my daughter to live a normal life. I want her to feel free to be who she wants, so paparazzi stop taking pics of her! Enough.”

She went on to sympathize with the family of the late Michael Jackson, whose kids have been endlessly hounded by the tabloid media.

“It’s times like these where I understand why Michael Jackson had his kids covered they were able to be anonymous until they decided to be public,” Applegate wrote, adding, “We need a law against this! Taking pics of kids is sick!”

The actress continued, “When I chose to be an actor we didn’t have paparazzi. We excelled on the merit of our work, not by what gown we were wearing.”

An admittedly “p*ssed” Applegate then called out “those who use paparazzi to further their careers,” saying such stars “are going to have a rude awakening when their talent doesn’t get them anywhere.”

“When I chose to be an actor we didn’t have celebrities. We had actors,” she explained. “Not people who wanted fame. I blame those people who need fame.”

Applegate then reiterated her main point: “Just imagine for one second you having fun with ur kid in the park and a bunch of a holes start surrounding you and freaking ur kid out.”

In 2010, then-California governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed a bill cracking down on paparazzi who are reckless in their pursuit of celebrities.

Obviously, there is still a long way to go.

What do you think of Applegate’s comments?

And yet she sold her baby pictures to people magazine. Really. You can’t get on your high horse when you yourself sold your baby’s photoshoot to the highest bidder. Obviously not very concerned about her privacy then.

  • Ella

I think that there is a key distinction to be made there though. When a celebrity sets up a photoshoot of that nature with a magazine, introducing their baby to the world, it’s under their control. It’s perverse, but by selling their photos of their baby to the celebrity “news” magazine of their choice, they’re actually protecting themselves and their kid from a paparazzi field day. They’re choosing the lesser of two evils. Is this the case with every celeb? Obviously not. Regardless, all of us should have enough common sense to realize that photographers following a child around every time they leave the house is probably not the best thing for their mental health. Just because it is reality doesn’t make it right.

I agree with Ella and would also add there is another issue that Christina didn’t address with her comments – security! Should celebs really have to start placing security guards with their children inside schools with their children, etc. like the first family? Regularly published photos of children makes those children a target and those children deserve to be able to grow up able to run freely on the playground, etc. without security teams hovering over them every second. I am guilty of clicking on the stories about celebrity/actor’s children simply because the kids are darn cute and I enjoy reading about their antics but I’m making a pledge now that I will no longer click on those stories. If the general public takes a stand against it, that will protect the children more than any law will.

Okay, first of all, there was no ‘surrounding’. The paparazzi pics I’ve seen just show her exiting the Health And Wellness center in Sherman Oaks and going down some stairs. Here is a sample:

There are no mob of photographers evident and Christina seems unaware of the photographer taking the pics I’ve seen – a set of 13 including the one above.

Second, there was paparazzi back when Christina started out, and I’ve seen pics back then of a very young Ms. Applegate wasted out of her mind, something I’m sure she’d rather do without. Sure, they weren’t as aggressive or as many as we see today, but they were there, and if you did something worthy of a picture in a tabloid, they went for it, just like the paps do today.

Lastly, the paps aren’t that interested in the kids when they’re past the baby stage and not yet teenagers, but if the celeb lugs them around they’re bound to be in the pictures when the paps snaps the celeb. Just leave the kids at home with the babysitter and the paps won’t snap pics of them, not even if the babysitter takes the kids out.

I agree. It is disturbing how they hover over the children of celebrities. Just leave them alone. I will also make that pledge. It is one thing to sell them to a magazine because it is the parent’s discretion to do so, however total strangers snapping shots at celebrity children or even the celebrity, surrounding them so they are unable to get to their car or even leave a place without them running over one of the paparazzi is ridiculous. One thing is freedom of the press or speech, but it should not be allowed to invade a celebrity and their children’s personal space.

  • skeptical

Oh, yes, absolutely – no one, especially an actor, has any right to take their children with them to do enjoyable things like go to the park. Children should all be left at home with sitters. Seriously? Paparazzi are a plague on humanity, and taking pictures of celebrity children isn’t OK, regardless of who they’re with.

  • D. Martin

I agree with this. I read that celebrities do the “introduction” photos — like you said — in a controlled environment. It also calms down the “feeding frenzy” to get that first photo. It seems the more celebrities try to protect their privacy the more they are dogged.

  • myself

No I don’t know the whole story but paps DO need to stop taking pics of all celebs kids. A major of them are done secretly w/ no one knowing they are being photographed at the time. So then that leads up to the headline that whoever the star is, has debuted their baby/child to world. When actually they didn’t even know they were photographed. Yes if an actor wants to share pics they should be done w/ a reputable mag at least. Some stars get restraining orders for them to stay away.

  • Jobay55

I think she is absolutely 100% correct! Not even a debatable subject to me.

  • Trentdogg2

    @D. Martin….AGREE!!!!!

  • Jab

All I can say about you is that you are really sick just as the whole mess of society who feels that celebs should be slaves and treated awful. You are really sick like the whole organization is. You must belong to that organization of trash. The USA was founded on freedom and justice for all.

  • i agree

It really is sick the way the paps don’t just go after the celebrity but after their kids. It is one thing for a photoshoot for People or US Weekly but going to the store, school, having fun in the park. anywhere the paps aren’t invited is downright creepy and not fair to be honest. i hear that matt damon or some other actor i can’t remember made a deal that his family not be bothered in exchange for him not caring if the paps followed him. i don’t care if you like celebrities or not but you gotta agree that going after their kids is not right. the paps should be fined or their pics shouldn’t even be sold to anyone if there’s a kid in it.

  • Anonymous

i agree with her. kids is not guilty for who their parents are.

  • Arcachnar

I agree with her. The children of the celebrities should live normal life without those pesky paps who keep on messing around in their private life. Those kids did not ask for it that their parents are famous. There need to be laws for this problem.

Edit: Christina still looks great. I had a bit of celebrity crush (right wording?) on her, when she was in Married with Children.

Photos and videos only by permission if you are a celebrity.

  • Retnan

““When I chose to be an actor we didn’t have celebrities.”

I sympathize with her but this statement is BS. The paparazzi weren’t as aggressive but there sure as hell were “celebrities” DECADES before Christina was BORN.
