Christina Aguilera Duets With Joe Maye During “The Voice” Blind Audition (VIDEO)
Christina Aguilera did a duet with returning contestant Joe Maye during his Blind Audition on “The Voice” on Tuesday. Watch below!
For the fourth Blind Audition episode of season 10, Maye took the stage to sing “I Put A Spell On You.” The contestant’s deep, soulful voice and passionate singing prompted Aguilera to hit her button rather quickly. The superstar clearly got lost in the groove as she continued to watch, but her solo lock on Maye disappeared when Blake Shelton eventually turned around, too.
The country crooner even leapt to his feet to give a standing ovation, and Aguilera did, too. Backstage, Pharrell’s season 9 artist Mark Hood could be seen going crazy for his “boy.” And Pharrell, though he didn’t opt to push his button, recognized that Maye was actually a two-time contestant. But this battle was between Aguilera and Shelton.
“You are my man, Joe,” Aguilera exclaimed. “You’ve got to be on my team!” The pop star even pointedly said, “I’m so happy I’m on this season and heard you with fresh ears. Were you on last season, and you didn’t push a button, Blake?”
Shelton amusingly tried to claim that his team was full last year by the time Maye had his audition, and went on to diss Aguilera’s track record. “It’s all about navigating this gauntlet, and you don’t really want to do that with somebody who’s not really familiar with how to make it to the end and win the show,” said the NBC music competition’s winningest coach.
But Aguilera had another card to play. After calling “I Put A Spell On You” one of her “favorite” songs and saying how much she’d like to sing it with Maye, Pharrell helpfully suggested she do so right then and there. Adam Levine even taunted, “Aw, you’re a dead man, Shelton!”
With the crowd’s cheers encouraging her, Aguilera left her red chair and made her way on stage. And as she and May went toe-to-toe with rich riffs, the rest of the coaches couldn’t help but stand in amazement. An awed Shelton even bowed down to give props.
So Maye had to choose Aguilera to be his coach, right? But of course! Check out the full video below!
