Christina Aguilera Apologizes for Star-Mangled Banner

Truth rating: 10

(FOX)

Christina Aguilera realized very quickly that she flubbed the lyrics to the National Anthem at Super Bowl XLV, and was extremely apologetic.

At one point while singing the Star-Spangled banner, Aguilera belted out the words, ”what so proudly we watched,” rather than the actual lyrics, “o’er the ramparts we watched.”

Afterwards, Aguilera explained in a statement: “I got so caught up in the moment of the song that I lost my place.”

“I can only hope that everyone could feel my love for this country and that the true spirit of its anthem still came through,” she added.

What do you think about Aguilera’s gaffe?

…If you sing the song with reverence, instead of trying to show off your voice and how skilled you are at singing, maybe we wouldn’t care so much….The National Anthem is a song that should be second nature to all Americans..and she didn’t just mess up words, she left out an entire line! To all artists who sing our Anthem in the future….Quite trying to remake it, sing it with love, sing it with reverence…we don’t a lesson in what your particle range is….we just want respect!

I agree with everyone stating the song is our National Anthem and should be performed the way it was written–NOT the way all these artists try to inflect their voices in where they shouldnt. As far as her forgetting the words–shame on her. Although I can understand, it should have NEVER happened. I have seen 6yr olds that were able to perform and get the words right. I think she was so intent on making the song “her own” she got lost. I hope if she is ever given the chance, she will sing it the RIGHT way and REMEMBER the words. All that aside, she did a good job of the words she did remember!

I say, get the hell over it. In case no one’s seen any of them, but she’s been performing the Star Spangled Banner since she was a child. She messed up once, and people give her hell for it. HELLO! It’s the damn Super Bowl for crying out loud! I want to see one of those people giving her a hard time over it crawl their sorry hind quarters in front of that many people and on national television and do it perfectly. Go ahead. There’s my challenge. If you don’t want to consider the situation, then you don’t have any reason to be whining about it, because most of us wouldn’t even perform in front of that many people.

As for the National Anthem being sung “the way it’s supposed to be sung,” it’s called creative license and freedom of expression. I mean, I wasn’t there, but I don’t believe Francis Scott Key had a certain “way” that it was to be sung. As a matter of fact, it was just a poem when he wrote it, and then music was put to it. What if he didn’t want music put to it? So I think “the way it’s supposed to be sung” is a matter of tradition, not rule and is also a moot point. Plenty of artists sing it the way they want, and it’s perfectly fine. It’s not like they’re smacking Key in the face by making it a rap or adding new verses to it. I’d consider that disrespectful, but not an artist who’s exercising their vocal range while singing the song.

She was too busy over singing and screachign she forgot the words. It wasn’t the moment, it was her trying to show up and riff and the notes made her screw up.

  • Chloe

She is not the first nor the last to mess it up. I’m sure she was nervous…But, I agree with other just sing the damn song and stop over exaggerating and drawing out the lyrics to show off your voice.

creative license and freedom of expression have no business being anywhere near our national anthem!
This is what it comes down to “creative license and freedom of expression” mangle what one considers sacred. Want creative license and freedom of expression? go remix a James Brown song!
If you agree to sing our natioal anthem, I heartily agree, with most posters here SHOW RESPECT!!
It is a privilege to be asked to sing it.

I hate when singers change it up & “make it their own.” But I don’t think she should be getting all the crap she has for missing up the words. It’s a HUGE stage & if she got nervous then that’s understandable.

  • pixie1824

I totally agree with Jennifer Leigh Gibbs.

Why even ask Christina to sing it if you don’t want her to sing the hell out of it?
People need to get over it. It’s just so easy to criticize.
