Chris Golightly Contract Led to “American Idol” Exit
3:25 pm, February 18th, 2010
As many people already know, there’s been a surprising American Idol exit today.
Chris Golightly was booted from the program’s ninth season despite being announced last night as one of the final 24 contestants. Tim Urban has replaced him.
A person close to Golightly now tells the Associated Press the show dropped him due to a “lack of veracity.” According to the source, the contestant didn’t disclose during the audition process that he had an existing music contract. American Idol expressly prohibits singers with current contracts from competing.
There’s been debate as to whether Golightly was subject to an existing contract with Dream Projects Entertainment. A former manager named Lawrence Franklin reportedly emailed Idol producers at 19 Entertainment with notifications that Golightly was still signed.
Golightly maintains the contracted ended before his Idol audition, he informed producers of the mix-up, but Urban had been tapped to fill the spot already.
