Chappie Wins Box Office In Debut On Quiet Weekend — SEE FULL TOP 10!
Chappie won a tight but weak box office weekend in its debut. The robot movie, starring Sigourney Weaver and Hugh Jackman, opened to $13.3 million.
That put it ahead of last week’s chart-topper, Focus. In its second week, the Will Smith con-man movie brought in $10 million for the #2 spot. The old-people-having-fun sequel The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel booked third with $8.6 million.
The Colin Firth spy flick Kingsman: The Secret Service grabbed fourth place with $8.3 million. The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water took fifth after taking in $7 million.
The numbers were awfully close together for the rest of the chart. Fifty Shades of Grey landed in the #6 spot with $5.6 million, while McFarland, USA was right behind with $5.3 million. They were followed by The Lazarus Effect at $5.1 million and seventh place.
And rounding out the Top 10 were the teen comedy The Duff ($4.9 million) and the new Vince Vaughn movie Unfinished Business ($4.8 million). This weekend marked big milestones for “Fifty Shades,” which has now passed $150 million domestically and $500 million worldwide, and #11 American Sniper, which at $337.2 million is now the highest-grossing film to be released in 2014.
