Celebrity Reactions: Philando Castile Shot Dead By Cop During Traffic Stop
Celebrities are reacting to the death of Philando Castile, a 32-year-old black man who was shot and killed by a police officer during a traffic stop in Falcon Heights, Minnesota on Wednesday night. See stars’ reactions below.
The aftermath of the shooting was streamed live on Facebook by Castile’s girlfriend, Lavish Reynolds, who said that her boyfriend had informed the cop he was carrying a permitted firearm, but was shot multiple times by the officer while reaching for his driver’s license. The disturbing footage depicted a bloodied Castile squirming in pain as Reynolds prayed for his life. He was pronounced dead a short time later at a Minneapolis hospital.
Castile’s death at the hands of law enforcement came just one day after a black man named Alton Sterling was shot dead by Louisiana police while being restrained on the ground. The back-to-back tragedies left many stars stunned. Andy Cohen asked on Twitter, “Now #PhilandoCastile!?!? Stop this madness,” and added in another tweet, “Watch the #PhilandoCastile video. It is sick. Horrible.” Rashida Jones similarly expressed, “I can’t wake up to another innocent black man gone. Police reform NOW.”
Josh Groban wrote, “There are so many broken, backwards issues at play here it’s numbing to digest. #PhilandoCastile #AltonSterling #blacklivesmatter.” Kathy Griffin noted, “His name was Philando Castile, 32 years old. He was a son, a father & a brother.” And Connie Britton said, “Today I am not proud. Today I take action though I feel helpless. We can’t stand for it!”
Zendaya listed a handful of other black people who were shot and killed by police within the past couple of years, noting, “To think… that’s not even the beginning of it, these are just the few we got on video…. makes me sick.” Meanwhile, John Legend argued, “We should not have to jump through hoops to prove black people shouldn’t be shot by police during routine traffic stops.”
Susan Sarandon tweeted, “This is not acceptable. One more life taken. One more family heartbroken. Another fatherless child. Accountability.” Ne-Yo wrote, “Another day, another hashtag. You didn’t deserve this, brother. You didn’t deserve this.” And Patton Oswalt pointed out, “Listen to how frightened the cop in the #FalconHeights video sounds. Why was he issued a gun? Why was he allowed to be a policeman?”
Patricia Heaton stated, “Don’t even know what to say about #PhilandoCastile. Speechless.” And Star Jones expressed, “This morning I vowed to focus on the joy in life; but I can’t when there is video evidence of murder and the murderers are on paid leave.” Mia Farrow suggested, “We need to overhaul police depts across the US. Employ good people who are members of the communities & want to help protect everyone.” Gossip Cop will update as more stars react to Castile’s death.
