Celebrities Sound Off On Columbus Day
Monday is Columbus Day, a federal holiday in the United States marking Christopher Columbus’ arrival in the Americas. Since 1970, It’s always celebrated on the second Monday in October, coinciding with Thanksgiving in Canada. While federal government offices and many schools close, observance varies state to state.
Stars are sharing a range of opinions about the day, from cheerful recognition to outright annoyance. Quite a few have expressed frustration that Columbus is credited for “discovering” a land already populated, an event that led to the extreme mistreatment of Native Americans. Rob Thomas of Matchbox 20, for instance, tweeted, “let’s use Columbus day as an opportunity to teach our kids how history gets rewritten and the real story behind Columbus’s ‘discovery.'”
On the other side of the spectrum, Nick Lachey simply wrote, “Happy Columbus Day, America and Happy Thanksgiving, Canada!” Check out some more of the celebrity tweets below, and tell us what you think.
