Celebrities React: President Obama Meets With Donald Trump
As Gossip Cop has reported, Trump won the 2016 presidential election early Wednesday, beating Hillary Clinton. In his speech on the outcome, President Obama revealed he had called Trump at 3:30 a.m. to congratulate him and invite him to the White House. The outgoing leader, who will leave his office in early 2017, stressed the importance of a “peaceful transition of power,” and vowed to work with Trump, much as former president George W. Bush did with him.
Now on Thursday, President Obama welcomed Trump to the White House for his first meeting with the president-elect. The business mogul was joined by the future First Lady, Melania Trump, and had a private discussion with Obama in the Oval Office. The photos and videos that have since emerged from the get-together have celebrities sounding off on Twitter.
Katie Couric posted a USA Today article with the headline, “Obama says he and Trump had ‘excellent conversation.'” Retweeting a picture of the two men in the Oval Office, Chrissy Teigen tweeted, “PLEASE JIMMY KIMMEL PLEASE RUN OUT PLEASE GOD.” George Takei commented, “President Obama is meeting Trump to discuss transition. It must feel like having to hand the command of the Enterprise over to Khan.”
Arsenio Hall wrote on Twitter, “Current FLOTUS, Michelle Obama, and presumptive future First Lady Melania Trump, are in the Whitehouse’s east wing, right now! #surreal.” He also shared video of President Obama and Trump on Instagram, writing, “Hey y’all can you wrap your mind around this meeting. #surrealism.” Alec Baldwin also captioned a photo of the pair, “Obama just told Trump that the Prez has an 8 am briefing everyday and, no, they don’t serve bacon avocado chili cheeseburgers.”
And in a nod to the election’s plagiarism scandal, Jerry O’Connell tweeted, “Michelle: ‘Welcome, Melania.’ Melania: ‘Welcome, Melania.'” The joke was retweeted by his wife, Rebecca Romijn. Not one to hold back, Olivia Wilde wondered, “How the hell did the Obamas stomach a meeting with that hate-monger today while kids were being harassed in his name by emboldened bigots?”
She went on to write, “.@realDonaldTrump isn’t worthy of a handshake from the Obamas, let alone the keys to their house of hope and progress.” Meanwhile, Oprah tweeted a screengrab from CNN showing Trump and Obama with the scrawl reading, “President-elect Trump: Honor To Meet With Obama.” Oprah, who was a Clinton supporter, wrote with the picture, “Everybody take a deep breath! #HopeLives!”
And Trump himself tweeted on Thursday night, “A fantastic day in D.C. Met with President Obama for first time. Really good meeting, great chemistry. Melania liked Mrs. O a lot!”
