Celebrities React: #MuteMonday To Unfollow POTUS Donald Trump On Twitter
Celebrities are joining the #MuteMonday movement on Twitter, which calls for people to unfollow the @POTUS account now that it belongs to Donald Trump. See stars’ tweets below.
When Trump was inaugurated last Friday, President Obama’s outgoing White House team transferred possession of the @POTUS Twitter account to the incoming camp. The new president has used the handle sporadically, instead mostly still tweeting from his “@realDonaldTrump” username. Nonetheless, many on the social media site are now taking part in a campaign to unfollow the @POTUS page, in hopes of lessening Trump’s potential impact, and encouraging fellow users to follow other leaders or organizations deemed worthy.
Among those embracing the movement are number of famous faces, many of whom supported Hillary Clinton during the presidential election. Lena Dunham tweeted, “Unfollowed @POTUS, followed @KamalaHarris, because women are the future of our party. #MuteMonday.” She added, “Also followed @RichardAyoade because we won’t get through the next 4 years without some thoughtful & hilarious British people #MuteMonday.”
Debra Messing wrote, “@POTUS @realDonaldTrump doesn’t deserve your follow. Support @splcenter working to stop discrimination, hate, & intolerance. #MuteMonday.” Jamie Lee Curtis said, “Trending now #MuteMonday unfollowing @realDonaldTrump @POTUS and listening to and following the lead of @CoryBooker! #wisdomfromthepain.”
“Unfollow @potus & @realdonaldtrump. Follow a cause/person working toward progress we all still believe in, like @PPact! #MuteMonday,” posted Padma Lakshmi. Chloe Grace Moretz tweeted, “#MuteMonday!!! Unfollow @realDonaldTrump and @POTUS and following @KamalaHarris my California Senator and women’s rights protector!!” Sophia Bush also said, “Unfollowed @POTUS and @FLOTUS, stacked the line up with @KamalaHarris @GloriaSteinem and @CoryBooker. Inspiration. Resistance. #MuteMonday.”
The @POTUS account currently has 14.3 million followers, while President Trump’s personal handle has 21.6 million. He has not acknowledged the unfollowing campaign, and his Twitter bio on the presidential page in fact notes, “Tweets by @DanScavino. Tweets by #POTUS signed -DJT.” Scavino, one of Trump’s assistants, is serving as Director of Social Media for his White House administration. He hasn’t commented on #MuteMonday, either.
