As Gossip Cop has reported, NBC is airing a one-time-only production of Hairspray with a star-studded cast. Celebrities participating in the broadcast include Ariana Grande, Derek Hough, Kristin Chenoweth, Jennifer Hudson, Martin Short, Dove Cameron, Sean Hayes, and Hairspray Tony winner Harvey Fierstein. Leading them all is newcomer Maddie Baillio.
The show is taking place on the backlot at Universal Studios, with a live feed for the East Coast. Now a number of famous fans are tweeting their reactions to the musical in real time. In fact, the running commentary actually kicked off before “Hairspray Live” even officially began. With less than 30 minutes to showtime, Andy Cohen enthusiastically tweeted, “I cannot WAIT for #HairsprayLive !!!!!!! FOR REAL!!!!!!!!”
William Shatner shared a photo of himself with a can of hairspray, urging followers to watch, while John Stamos offered up a throwback photo, noting, “That time me and @nickjonas did #Hairspray at the Hollywood Bowl. Don’t miss #hairspraylive Tonight on @nbc.” And Trevor Moran revealed he’d actually be in the show’s audience. “Here at #HairsprayLive SO EXCITED AHHHH,” he posted.
As soon as the live show started, Cohen confessed, “Goosebumps at #HairsprayLive overature – no joke.” Debra Messing exclaimed, “#HairsprayLive I’M IN!!!!! Break a leg!!” Mark Ballas told his longtime best friend (and recent best man), “Let’s go @derekhough you got this.” He went on to write, “Hell yeah @KChenoweth is fabulous as usual. What a Pro!!!!”
When a Twitter follower mistakenly thought Beth Behrs was part of the cast, the “2 Broke Girls” star candidly replied, “I wish!” Sofia Carson wrote, “On a flight watching #HairsprayLive. I cannot wait to see @dovecameron shine. I’m cheering for you Chlo, this is your night. Beyond proud.” Proud brother Frankie Grande tweeted, “OMG! @ArianaGrande is SLAYING #HairsprayLive! She’s perf as Penny! Like I peed when she said ‘I don’t hear anything maybe it’s the altitude.'”
After Jennifer Hudson’s first number, Michelle Collins commented, “I mean Jennifer Hudson is just so beyond, houses being brought down all across America.” And after her second, Heather Morris expressed, “You better sang miss @IAMJHUD!!!!” Hudson’s Color Purple co-star Cynthia Erivo also cheered, “YES COME ON JEN!!!! #HairsprayLive @IAMJHUD Show them all!!”
Anna Kendrick noted, “Andrea Martin is from my hometown. This is the most validating statement I can ever say about myself/my hometown #AndreaMartin #hairspray.” Jordan Fisher, who starred in “Grease Live,” revealed, “We have #HairsprayLive on every screen backstage at @HamiltonMusical right now and everyone is LIVING.” “Ellen DeGeneres” producer Andy Lassner also remarked, “We need something like #HairsprayLive every night for the next 4 years.”
